Default Upgrade dvd drive to Blu-ray

I have a VGN SZ650N

Is there a way to upgrade the dvd drive to a blu-ray drive? Can I just buy a slim blu-ray internal drive? They seem symmetrical while the drive on my laptop is shaped differently. Thanks,

you should probably check cyberlink's site. they have a (or used to have) a hd advisor that would scan your pc or laptop to see if it can handle it.

handle the software?

I'm looking to buy a drive that will fit in my laptop to watch movies with. I'm thinking the newer Z blu-ray drives would fit, but would hope a slim internal blu-ray drive would work as well :X

The previous posters right, you really need to know if your laptop has the necessary grunt to run Bluray...

Yes, firstly you should check whether your laptop has sufficient power to handle blu-ray, The Cyberlink advisor will do this. Secondly, you should check whether you could get a blu-ray drive for your laptop. Any drive may not fit into the laptop drive bay. However, you may get an external drive for the laptop.

I guess I just figured that 2.2ghz intel core 2 duo with 4gb of ram was enough. I'll look into if my computer can handle it.

Does anyone know about the sz and z models. From what I can tell the z model is the newer version of the sz model. Which is why I'm hoping that a z model blu-ray drive will fit into a sz. Too bad they're 1 grand from sonystyle. But if I can find a used one that would work.

If you could find one, it would work. However, it could be challenge to find a good quality used drive for the laptop. Alternatively you may try Firewire or USB external blu-ray drive.

Ya, they're 1 grand from sony new. Which is such a load of bullcrap. I could probably stick a panasonic or sony slim brand in there, but it would look ghetto.

If an external drive is acceptable, you can easily test the complete system for blu-ray compatibility before purchasing the drive.

Your SZ's Video Card doesn't have the juice required to play Blu-ray. It may work occasionally with some movies but there is no guarantee that it would work with movies that have very high bit rate.

Moreover, even if your GPU can handle it, it would be cost prohibitive to upgrade since your SZ needs 9.5 mm optical drive instead of more common 12.5 mm optical drive. 9.5mm drive is still very expensive ($1000) and it can not be used to burn DVD+R DL.

Well, I see many issues with PC/laptop blu-ray play back. It seems that many headaches can be avoided if a blu-ray player is used.

I just checked the specs for the VGN SZ650N... it is similar to my Inspiron 1525. I have the 2.16 Core Duo, and the VGN has the 2.2 GHz one. The VGN includes the Intel X3100, which is also in the Inspiron 1525, and I run BDs at 1920x1080 just fine. My laptop didn't come with a BD-ROM drive, so I ordered one from BixNet.

Today I ordered a Broadcom BCM970012 HD accelerator card for my laptop... I'll post results here after I get it. BD playback has been mostly fine with Power DVD 9 Ultra, but a dedicated hardware accelerator should yield the best results.
