I tought I would try something different, start a thread about a movie that was made before 2005 (yes there were movies made before TDK
![]() I just completed Legend by Ridley Scott. Now I must tell you first that I saw that movie only once before and believe it or not that was way back in 1986 when it was release here. You might wonder why it took me 23 years to watch this movie again? At the core of it all is that I was extremely dissapointed back then. I think I went in the movie expecting Conan and well for anyone who's seen Legend you know it could not be more different if it wanted to. I have to admit now 23 years later that it was not as bad as I remember way back then. There were still some elements that were bothering me : First, Tom Cruise. During the entire movie I was having a hard time accepting him or beleiving him to be the young hero Jack. I just could let my imagination accept him as such. Also is it just me or does he spend the entire movie with the same stupid expresion on his face? Second, the score. I suppose that I would prefer a full orchestra score in a fantasy film. I usualy do not dislike the music of Tangerine Dream but I find it so annoying to know the entire music of the movie is done with a couple of keyboards. Third, the sets. Of course lot's of scenes in countless movies are done or sets but it's seem to be so obvious in this movie that it was hard for me to accept I was in a fantasy land. Everything look so fake at time I had a hard time getting into it. However this time around I was able to understand the movie a lot more. I was able to appreciate the story that was being told, this is not a hack & slash movie, it's a poetic story. I was really impress by Mia Sara, her acting seen so much better then Tom Cruise or maybe it was just that I find him to be so lame in this role she look's incredible next to him? It's almost incredible to think it's Tim Curry under all that makeup as the Lord of Darkness. I believe that the Director's cut actualy as the score by Jerry Goldsmith? Is that the case? For those who as seen that version, does the mucis make's a huge difference on the movie? Now I did not see this in HD, it was SD on my DVR from a classic movie channel. What is your opinion of this Ridley Scott movie? Last edited by P@t_Mtl; 09-11-2009 at 11:50 PM. |

Yes, the director's cut has the Goldsmith score, and is overall the better version.

Yes, Tom Cruise is horrible in it and looks the same in every shot and emotes the same pathetic look. By the end of the film, I just want to smash his face in.
Mia Sara, although pretty, is also a terrible actress. As already mentioned in another post, the Ultimate Edition does restore Goldsmith's original score, which is on the director's cut. The same edition also contains the original theatrical edition with Tangerine Dream. It's a bit heavy handed, over-blown and pounded over your head in regards to the cliché fantasy of good vs. evil. I still enjoy the imagery. Sometimes I mute the whole thing and play NIN instead. |

Sorry, I still like the US version in part due to the Tangerine Dream Score. I particularly like the last song in the movie as it is in the movie (not the soundtrack)- Loved By the Sun sung by Jon Anderson of Yes and Tangerine Dream.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STxAkJfTeGQ I also like the song in the credits Is Your Love Strong Enough by Bryan Ferry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECa_OSZD_Nw I hope that when released on Blu-ray they will be included in a better playback mode for the US version just as the Jerry Goldsmith version. Tangerine Dream is very dated when I hear it now, like most 80's music. Alan Parsons Project also ruined Ladyhawke for me. Some of it is OK, but then when those drum machines kick in, I want to scream. The Never Ending Story also had a similar sounding soundtrack. In fact I think have the title song...I believe it is Kajagoogoo and Limahl.

I think if you liked the THEATRICAL version, after all these years, you will like the DIRECTOR'S CUT better.
I watched the movie for the first time a couple of years ago. It was the Director's cut. I really enjoyed it. As someone said "It's a bit heavy handed, over-blown and pounded over your head in regards to the cliché fantasy of good vs. evil". But if you have a proper frame of mind, it's something that you get to like. And yes, the imagery was extraordinary. I found it charming and convincing in a fantasy level. Can't wait to watch it in Blu Ray !. Afterwards, I watched the theatrical version a little. The thing that shocked me the most was the music. If anything else, it's because of the more appropriate score that you, P@t_Mtl, will like the movie even more. Give it a try. |

I loved this movie growing up, but of course it is an 80's movie and a lot of them don't age very well. I've seen a lot of movies that just don't do it for me the way they did back then.
I haven't seen this one in a long time, but I don't think Cruise was bad in it. For one, this is the first movie he did. Second, the character was supposed to be a little on the lame side. I don't think the end result would've been much different with a different actor. This movie is still pretty watchable for me, but yeah the last time I did see it I didn't think it was as good as I did when I was a kid. One movie from that era that I can watch countless times is Big Trouble in Little China. This is a timeless flick IMO. |

I too also saw the movie for the first time in the theater and loved the score by Tangerine Dream, it is what stands out in my mind as what made the movie, that and the visuals of the great sets, very dreamy and fantasy-like, all eye candy! I bought the special edition DVD with both versions a couple of months ago, and after seeing the version with Jerry Goldsmith's score, it was not the same movie, it stunk!
