ya the dvds of both true lies and the abyss were shit. None 16x9 the transfers were from the old laserdisc days. My favorite part was that fox kept putting on the covers that they were 16x9. lies lies lies I returned every version because of that. I think cameron has a problem with these films that is why he will not spend any time on them. Thats all I can think of. Ya know fox would release them in a second if they could its all up to cameron.

Hopefully when Avatar comes out theatrically or on DVD/BD. I know a anamorphic remastered version of True Lies exists in R1 because both it and Speed were scheduled for late 2001 release under the Five Star Collection banner. Then 9/11 happened and True Lies was put on hold indefinitely. It's my most wanted BD.

Nope. It was a two-disc Five Star DVD that was scheduled for either late 2001 or early 2002. It was put on hold after 9/11. I specifically remember The Bits reporting it.

There is a great thread on it over at 'hometheaterforum' with Van Ling participating in it. http://www.hometheaterforum.com/foru...4728/true-lies Van Ling 7/26/08: "I was actually just getting started on doing something for "True Lies" when 9/11 happened, and at that point the project was put on indefinite hold due to the uncertainty of things at the time... there was a concern about the domestic terrorism angle, especially since the climax involves a nuke in a downtown skyscraper, as well as the scenes of "terrorist slapstick" in the van on the bridge. None of this concern affects either the film or its disc, but the thought was that a) it would be hard for interviewees to talk about the film in the correct tone and context so close to the event --it might seem insensitive talking about how fun it was to make a terrorist-themed comedy with the real-world events going on at the time, and b) the release of the DVD in that year's timeframe might come off as exploitative opportunism at best and incendiary jingoism at worst (see South Park's "Cartoon Wars" for a great take on fear of retaliation). We know now that probably none of these concerns would have been warranted, but it's true that at the time, we all knew that if nothing else, the film itself would get overshadowed by everything going on around it. So it's been on hold ever since, and again, JC has to approve a new transfer and such, so that's been holding things up as well. I don't think he has any problem with the context these days. I was told by someone at one point not too long after 9/11 that the film was more popular than ever, since it showed us winning out over the bad guys." Van Ling 2/6/09: "True Lies is in the queue along with The Abyss and T1... all require Jim's attention, which is currently monopolized (quite rightly) by Avatar... Based on the HD status of the older Cameron films' video masters and what needs to be done make them JC-approved, I'd reckon that they'll come out on Blu-ray over the next couple of years in the following order: T1, True Lies, Abyss. But that's just an educated guess... don't hold me to it! ;-)" So in the end it looks like we will have to wait untill after 'AVATAR' is released on Blu-ray before he turns his attention back to his previous movies. However...after 'AVATAR' comes out on Blu, who is going to be interested in any of his older movies anyway? ![]() . Last edited by Duffy12; 09-16-2009 at 12:57 AM. |

T1 needs a remaster in the worst way. That was actually one of the first BD's I bought, and I remember thinking, "well, this looks okay compared to the DVD", but I was expecting to be blown away. Will definitely get all three when they are released. All classics.
