Thumbs up

This is awesome. I pre-ordered tonight on Amazon.com.
Was Rush in Rio recorder in high-def or on film? I used to watch that thing constantly when I didn't have very many rock/metal videos.

Now it is Dec. 8, 2009. I own the standard DVD but I have seen ( slightly shorter version) on the Palladia channel many times, it looks great in HD. I hope it comes in a regular Blu-ray case but I doubt it will.

Happened to Google for R30 blu-ray yesterday, came across this thread, became very excited (I've been waiting for R30 to be released on BD), placed my pre-order on Amazon.ca.

The DVD version of this disc is excellent and "Snakes & Arrows" on BD is impressive, so I have very high expectations for R30 on BD.

If the R30 Blu ray looks anything like R30 does when I watch it on Palladia it'll be a stunner imho.

Hmmm...just found this on Rush's on-line store:
Quote:
This concert was shot in High Definition, 16:9 Widescreen, PCM Stereo, and Dolby Digital 5.1.
Nothing about 1080p or lossless audio. I'm hoping it's just a case of someone "copying and pasting" the information from the DVD version, and that this doesn't, in fact, represent the final specs. for the BD version.

I sent an e-mail to rushbackstage.com (Rush's on-line store) requesting clarification of the specs.:

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.
Their reply was a little surprising:

Thank you and have a nice day.
I would have expected Rush's official on-line merchants to know a little more about the products they're selling!

Well, mine is in the mail and I should have it by tomorrow or, at the latest, Thursday. I guess I'll have to wait until then to see what the deal is...

My copy from Amazon.ca arrived in the mail today. I unwrapped my disc, since there was basically no information on the case re. the audio or video. (There were only the logos for Blu-ray, 5.1, DD and DTS.) The booklet inside the case had no A/V info, either.

I threw the single disc on for about ten minutes, just to see what was what. I found the song-selection menu to be a bit clumsy to navigate. The audio menu offered DTS-HD MA and DD5.1. Good. I played a few clips in DTS:

- Audio seems brighter, clearer and the low end seems more defined. I think I hear more robust sound from Geddy's bass and some of the synth clips. Very nice.

- Video looks cleaner overall, with better contrast and less noise in most scenes. Certain scenes, however - like when high-mounted set lighting does a vertical sweep - show grain or artifacting or some sort of noise.

My initial impression is that it's a clear improvement over the DVD, but not as great an improvement as I was anticipating. And it's nowhere close to the standard set by "Snakes & Arrows" or "The Police: Certifiable" or even the Dave Matthews "Live at Radio City Music Hall" disc.

I'm hoping I get a chance this coming weekend to watch the show and to do some A/B-ing.

Thanks for the update. I wasn't impressed by audio from "Snakes & Arrows". To me, it's not even close to "Certifiable" or other demo level titles. To bad that, according to you, R30 is even worse.

It's been a while since I heard "Snakes & Arrows", so I don't recall exactly how good the audio is, but I do remember that it was better than the audio on the "R30" DVD.

I own "Certifiable" and "Live at Radio City Music Hall" and I've heard them more often and more recently than "Snakes and Arrows". In my opinion, they provide "reference level" PQ and AQ and, compared to them, "R30" on Blu-ray falls short. But it is definitely an improvement over the DVD.

Are the disc 2 supplements of the DVD ("Interviews" and "The Anthem Vault") not on the BD?
