Default Confusing problem with my PS3 and TV

I have this problem with my ps3. I hook it up to my tv and I get a purple screen. BUT when I hook up the ps3 to another tv it works fine.

I just had a tech from BB check out the tv and he said that its the tv not being compatable with the PS3 because the tv played cable fine. Both are connected through hdmi. He suggested I upgrade the firm ware and for the ps3 and that should fix it.

Said there was nothing he was going to do for me since the tv worked fine. Said he can't do anything and "your stuck, because you bought the tv and the PS3 and they just don't work together". Told me that he was going to tell his bosses that he won't come here again because the tv is fine.

Has anyone heard this? A TV and PS3 just not compatable?

The tv is a Westinghouse. While I was writing my original post the tech came back to give me a receipt that he was here, and said that the only way to fix this is to get a new TV????? But since there is "nothing" wrong with it there is nothing that he can do. That means BB wont replace this TV either so now what?

Any ideas if this really is the tv or its the PS3?

I use HDMI for video and digital audio for my surround sound. It's weird. When I turn on the PS3 I get the purple screen so I have to switch the HDMI port that the PS3 is connected to on the tv and the tv is fine.

If I shut the PS3 and restart it I have the same problem and have to change the port back to the original place it was in before.

Have you tried hooking up the TV and PS3 in a different way other than HDMI, like component??
If the TV has HDMI connections, It doesn't sound like it's a POS, I don't buy that it is not compatible with the PS3 - sounds like BS to me.

Also, try a different HDMI cable, those cables are very fragile, I have gone through three so far.

No, I'll got to gamestop later to get composite connections and see if that works. He asked me that too, but I WANT 1080 through HDMI, that will only be 720. Besides I shouldn't have to do that to get my ps3 to work. Right?

May or may not help but you might want to get a new HDMI cable and check that out...

Whats the model # of the TV..

Actually you can get 1080 with composite cable so you might want to check into that also.

I understand, but we want to confirm that it is not an incompatibility problem which most here I think have never heard of.
- If a different method of hook-up works, then TV/PS3 not being compatible does not sound like the case.
- If you use a different (new if possible) HDMI cable and it still does not work, then you may have a problem with the TV or PS3 HDMI connector/board.
- Purple screen does not sound like a handshaking issue, it sounds like a connection issue.
- If either TV or PS3 are still under warranty, you may be able to get that fixed.

Good luck and keep us posted.

OP I was just wondering how come you are always having issues with your TV. Are you abusing it every time you fix it and then another issue comes up.

I hope you don't take an offense to what I just said, but I am curious.

LOL, my wife and I wonder the same thing. I'll tell you what though, I'm not buying a westinghouse anymore. That was the other TV I had problems with in like January of this year. That was the mother board went bad. I never have the problem with the same tv. Its always a different one. And usually after its about 2 yrs old. I got rid of that and bought a Toshiba. That tv's in the bedroom though. This one is in my livingroom.

I don't understand it. My tv is on a nice glass stand, the PS3 is under it. NEVER GETS MOVED!!!! neither of them. Well until I had this issue and I moved the PS3 to the bedroom and it works fine there. Works good in the office tv too.

lol.

Okay have you tried checking the setting on your PS3 to make sure that it is compatible with the TV's specifications. This could be a problem.

keep us updated so we could investigate other means to fix this problem for you.

you should either try your ps3 with hdmi cable on another persons TV or try someone else's ps3 with hdmi cable on your Tv. That way you can better isolate the culprit. And when you say purple screen do you mean everything looks purple (images have purple tint) or do you just see a purple screen with no image?

I had a Westinghouse, and after about a year or so, all the inputs went bad except for the composite inputs. Fortunately I had an extended warranty and got the TV's main board replaced.

The problem was degenerative, too. First, one port had intermittent problems...then over time it got worse until all but one input was dead.

Composite video and S-Video is limited to 480i only. Component video inputs can handle 1080i. Back in 2005 the first 1080P Westinghouse that someone I know owned, had a problem with the DVI inputs that prevented them from using any HDCP DVI device like a D-VHS or cable box, etc. If one searches this forum and others there have been some models of Westinghouse that have had HDMI or HDCP compatibility issues with PS3. There are many people that end up having to use the analog inputs on some TV's due to incompatibility problems. Usually TV's that use HDMI 1.3 and higher work 90% of the time with other devices. So this HDMI incompatibility issues with some brands and models is becoming less of a issue on the newer models.

Some of the new models of Westinghouse TV's have been Simplay Labs certified. The following is a list of models and brands of TV's that have been verfied to work at 100% of the HDMI specs. When connecting a Simplay Labs certified TV to a Simplay certiifed device using good quality HDMI cables the connection is Guaranteed to work 100% of the time.

Not being on the list does not automatically mean the TV brand or model has poor HDMI hardware or software. If the TV is not on the list it might mean that the model was not sent to Simplay Labs to be tested.

This is what the TV looks like when starting up. Except its completely purple. (couldn't get my camera to get that shot).

This is what it looks like when playing a Blu Ray.

I made alot of phone calls and BB is sending the supervisor today. Atleast that's what they said. So we'll see.

Ok, so BB just left. He said he's seen this before. Not on this model tv but on other tv's. He's seen it in Green, and Blue too.

Said that he believes it is the motherboard. Something about the ps3 puts out 1080 and my cable box and dvd player aren't putting out such a large amount of signal. Said there's probably a short somewhere in the board.

The tech said that it should be in by next Friday if it's not already in stock now. Interesting isn't it.

I hope the first BB tech gets his ass chewed-off and gets sent back for training, for not knowing what the hell he was talking about. Good for you for not taking no for an answer.
