Default When a 'free' Xbox 360 isn't free...

So I was given an Xbox 360 that was being thrown out...the owner didn't have a power supply as it had blown out (tried plugging a US version into a UK plug...).

I was all excited that I was getting a free Xbox 360 - because as a true-Blu PS3 guy, I would never go buy one on my own

Anyway - it was at this point I figured out the true cost of owning a damn 360...

The purchase of the power brick (and I do mean brick) was a given - about $30.

But then, I saw there was no hard drive attached. OK - would have to buy a lame Microsoft HD for about $130 for 120GB...

I don't have a wireless adapter handy because my PS3 has it's own...so I'd have to buy that for another $25.

THEN, to play online I have to buy a $50 membership...every year!?!

For all that, I could buy a PS3 Slim. Seriously...why is this console so popular then you have to buy all these add ons?

Needless to say, the damn thing is sitting in the corner, where it will stay.

If it had an HDMI port and if you were in the US I would ask if you wanted to sell it.

I didn't own a PS3 until the Slim came out, but I've owned a 360 since about a year after they debuted. When I opened up the Slim box and began plugging things in, I was shocked that the power cable was just a cable. I was so used to having a brick as a power supply, haha.

No one forced you to do all that. You could have just sold it quickly for a profit. BTW, you got ripped off on the HD they aren't that expensive.

Perhaps prices have gone down considerably now but roughly 1 year ago I paid 10.000 Yen for a measly 20GB HDD for my 360.

I started calculating the cost of online, wireless, etc with my 360 and didn't bother investing in it. Just played the console offline to finish Blue Dragon and sold it off. The shaky reliability and overpriced peripherals just kills it for me.

That's my point, people are complaining about things they HAD CONTROL OVER. Research everything FIRST before making purchases so you know what you're getting into.

derailing the thread by posting comments like that, I agree. I believe it can be civil.

Never owned a 360, not because any reason than I am not a HUGE gamer...PS2 was fine til the PS3 was released. The Blu-ray thing was a given. Got the Wii for the family and myself, its fun, but that fun i shortlived as my interest dies fast until the next big game.

Why do people act as if buying accessories for consoles was a brand new concept brought forth by the XBox 360? Can any true gamer here tell me the last console (if any EVER) that they have not bought accessories for?

all what add ons? the only thing that does'nt come with a console is the stupid wireless adapter. wireless sucks for online play anyway. The LIVE subscription is $50 a year cuz it is 10x better than PSN. it's no different than getting a PS3 with all those things missing, you still have to pay for them to replace them.

Good question.

Let's see, PS2, I only bought a memory card and an extra controller, so the peripherals cost wasn't huge {maybe $60}

For the PS3 I haven't bought a single peripheral yet, you don't NEED the remote, and it has built in HD and Wifi so I don't have to worry there.

You said that it was like getting a PS3 without those things, it's impossible {last time I checked} to get a PS3 without wireless controllers.

Why would I buy a headset?

It's bluetooth. I already had one that was a peripheral from my phone...

But the official Sony headset is worth it! Probably the best headset I've used for gaming.

I'll have to take your word on that.

I just like the fact that with the PS3 I'll likely only ever {maybe} buy another controller or two {plus games} and that's it.
