Default The Official Sony Speakers Thread

Please discuss your Sony speakers in this thread. You can include pictures, reviews, or any other comments regarding your speakers.

Manufacturer’s Website: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...1&N=4294966096

The name says it all really ! Although there may not that be too many owners here, I thought it deserved a thread. Maybe someone here owns the gorgeous looking high-end SS-AR2's, that are supposed to sound pretty darned nice.

I can honestly say that those Sony Speakers look Amazing .
If you had not said Sony I would have guessed that these were from an Extremely High-Dollar,High-End line like B&W produces .

Way to go Sony,I am thoroughly impressed to see that you can and do produce some Beautiful Speakers.
I wonder what kind of price tag these Sony's carry ?

They do look nice don't they ? I'm pretty sure that they're Japan-only, but maybe not as expensive as Sony's Sountina:

Sony used to make high end speakers for the US market, but you don't see them anymore.

I think there already is a Sony Speaker thread somewhere, one of the Mods may way to combine this one and that one.

Cheers Callas. I did check the Master List of Speaker Review Threads, and there isn't a Sony one on there, hence the thread.

They are to be purchased in Germany for 7999 Euros at retail store. Very cool, but for that money ....

LOL My god remember them ? Didn't Cheech go on to appear in some cop drama ?

I must admit that Sountina is very reminiscent of a full size bong/shotgun.

Sony offers the SS-AR1, a new pair of speakers priced at US$7600 a piece. And you need two of them! What makes these speakers expensive? The answer is on its case, which made of maple wood from Hokkaido in Japan. Measuring 320mm x 490mm x 1080mm and weights 57kg, each speaker is entirely hand made and receives two 200mm cones, one 130mm cone and a 25mm tweeter. Each speaker has a range of 28Hz to 60 kHz. Do you still want to buy these speakers?

Sony has showcased their super expensive Sony Sontina speaker at the IFA 2008. It is a 6 foot tall speaker that produces a 360 degree pool of sound by vibrating every corner of the organic cylinder. The speaker delivers a high quality sound with a room enhancing illumination. The Sountina Glass Speakers will be released in the future for ¥1,000,000 (about €6,500 / $10,000). However, the release date is still unknown.

Sony’s SRS-ZX1 speakers come with the “Mobius Duct” technology which supposedly creates a potent low-frequency response or “better bass than some other low-end speakers. The speakers measure 3.1 inch x 6.6 inh x 7.4 inch and have a built-in amplifier with 2x analog inputs and 20W x 2 channel output. The speakers will be out on October 20th only in Japan for $426.

It's cool to see such high-end speaker offerings from Sony.

Here's old school pic of my old Sony SS-U6030 speakers, which I originally got as a gift in 1996. They reside in their original factory box and packing materials now, and are still new in appearance (with grills, of course). I thought I might have used them in a bedroom theater, but their bulky size seems to keep me from unpacking them for such use. Don't know what I'll do with them.

Totally agree Rob - and nice pic of your Sony's ! Shame that they're back in their boxes though.

Home Cinema Choice have done a mini-review on the SS-AR1's, and they look gooooood ! Here's another pic and the article :

Apologies for the large images !

I found this pic of them hooked up too. I would LOVE to demo these personally :

It's almost pornographic.

Those are some big a$$ wires coming from the amp to the speakers, shouldn't they be wiring a house with those?

I've got a Sony 12" 120w SA-WM40 powered sub, Sony SS-CN100 Center, SS-SR11 surrounds. The sub I picked up years ago at Best Buy on sale for $120 (I think retail was $180/$200), the center I got at a thrift store for $10, the surrounds I picked up at an electronics store I worked at. The sub has impressed me the most, the bass that comes out of this unit is incredible especially with bookshelf speakers for music and HT. I live in an apt. and I hadn't realize how loud it could get till I could hear the dishes in the kitchen cabinets moving. The center was a bargain and sounds great!

I used to have 5 of these Sony B1000's for all 5 channels and they sound good, and being $25 apiece you can't really complain. They don't produce audiophile sound, but definitely audio-enthusiast level. Solid heavy cabinets and quality construction. I still use 2 for surrounds. Its a shame they don't play a little lower... if they actually went down to 80hz like the specs say, they'd be perfect for a mid-level HT! As it is though I found I need to cross them at 100 which gives you some directional bass out of the sub. I'd love to hear the SSF-6000 or 7000 towers, I may get the 6000's for the office, $137 shipped for a pair of 4-way towers!

Anyone else with experience with the current line of Sony's?

I've got some old 3-way 12" woofer Sony's that I used for party speakers in college... poor things got abused so badly. Still work for the garage though
