Default BDA Strikes Back...

Blu-ray Association hits back at HD DVD sales claims
Wants consoles included in figures to measure success

by Stuart Miles

13 July 2007 - The Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee has hit back at HD DVD’s figures in yet another tit-for-tat argument over which format is winning the format war, and who is the best at making the numbers work for them.

According to the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee, it says that this claim is “misleading and misrepresentative” of the real and clear market trends in Europe, before admitting that HD DVD “does have sales advantage for several reasons.”

Where bda has a gripe however, is that the HD DVD figures fail to include the European PC drive sales or Sony’s PlayStation 3 console.

According to the BDA European Promotions Committee including these would mean that Blu-ray Disc accounts for almost 95 per cent of all next generation hardware sales in Europe this year.

Earlier this week sales figures from the European HD DVD Promotion Group announced that Toshiba has taken a leading share of the European market for standalone high definition players, according to independent pan-European research by GfK.

Following what they describe as a strong period of sales and momentum for the format, HD DVD’s share of the market averaged 74% from January to May 2007.

Taking a swipe at the Blu-ray stats that are bolstered by the number of PS3's sold, Steve Nickerson, senior vice president, high hefinition media at Warner Bros sates:

"These figures are especially important because the standalone player market is by far the biggest driver of movie sales in the long-term."

"This is simply because those who buy a standalone player are interested solely in buying and watching movies and other video content, whereas those with HD drives built into games consoles are primarily interested in games.
"
come on...is this true? aren't bd movies outselling hd-dvds? i for one own a ps3 and care more about the movies than the games. it was just a cheaper alternative to the pricey single function stand alones...

A certain percentage of PS/3 are sold as predominately players too.

I would think Warner's main interest would be in selling discs. Which is selling more discs for you Nickerson?

So, Nickerson is still an HD DVD fanboy hoping for miracles.

how frustrating is this? fighting facts with speculation...

now someone needs to do a study finding out how many video game users use their consoles for movie watching? i used my xbox, 360 and now ps3 for exactly those things...moreso than videogames. his assertion is ridiculous...especially considering the statistical landslide of blu-ray player sales (including the ps3 and pcs with blu ray drives) over hd-dvd machines. so lets say that only 1/2 of ps3 owners actually use their systems for blu-ray playback (which is a ludicrous statistical hackjob to give hd-dvd a handicap) - blu ray would still be leading the market... in an instance like this...we have to look at dvd sales and blu-ray is clearly winning (plus its even more clearcut when you consider the fact that hd-dvd had a significant head start)

I have 2 ps3s. I consider them to be blu ray players that also have video games. the games account for less than 10% of their use. like I said before I must not exist in the same dimension as the hd dvd spin doctors. does hd dvd ever talk about discs sold? or just stand alone consoles. f*** standalone. I have a phone that i'm posting this on, sending emails, and text messages from. should this not be counted as a phone because it does those things?

So even if it's only 10% of 4-5 million PS3 that use it exclusively for movies...what is the total HD-DVD units sold again?

And what are the percentages that bought it for both uses? Like me.

And what are the percentages that bought it for strictly games but get converted and become blu-ray buying fanatics

Yes, your phone is NOT a phone and should not be counted among phone sales.

And how would Nickerson like access to large, high income demographic that is much more likely to spend extra for quality product, and already owns the box that can use his product?

They are playing games? OK. Earn your damn pay cheque Steve, and market your product to them. How much handholding do you need here?!

I am in the same boat. I only own 2 games but I own many more movies!

If standalone players are so important to movie purchases, why are BDs outselling HD DVDs? This from the company that also stated that in the HD market, they sell 70% BD and 30% HD DVD....

This is funny because if is this was the fact then HD HDVD would be winning in disc sales.
