Default Amp for New Sub Builds

I have a distributor friend tell me that the RE Audio subs will out perform JL audio subs. Explicitly the JL W15 and RE SRX15. It all started with me contacting him about purchasing a 15" sub. He sold me both subs for $225 total and told me to build the subs compare and let him know. I am having 2 sealed enclosures built for each sub now I would like to know what would be a good amp top drive these subs. I have a dayton 240 plate amp hanging around and wanted to know if I should use that and purchase another or purchase a behringer a500?

Out perform in what way, SPL ??? Perhaps and remember that these subs are designed for that purpose for the car audio industry (SPL competitions). What counts is sound quality unless SPL is your goal, and then that will be within a certain frequency range. So it doesn't mean it will be great for home theater use. Usually (I haven't looked) these types of subs are really inefficient and require lot's of power, and when seriously underpowered distort easily.

If you already own these subs you can design a box to somewhat help out with the shortcomings. As for amps, look beyond typical plate style amps, and look into something similar that Big Daddy uses on one of his subs !!!

Many people r now building subs from car audio subwoofers based on the Ts parameters. These subs can go as low as the upper teens lower twenties per winisd. The JL audio subs are very popular in HT applications. So you guys think I should purchase a power amp? I will research the ones in Big Daddy's post.

No, I'm not saying all subs used for car audio can't be used for other applications !!! But some are not as good a candidate as others.......... In the car audio circuit, I'm sure you might/do know, they have those SPL competitions. Since some sub manufacturers design and build a series/line of subs to excel for that very application. It "might" not be such a good idea to use a mega watt sub designed with one goal in mind.

Amps, the quality of stand-alone amps are much better than the plate amps that manufacturers stuff inside home theater subs. Doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune on one though. They make stand-alone sub amps w/ x-over. Check out out mono blocks or bridgeable 2ch amps as well. But you will need an external active/passive x-over, and even look at the ones with phase control & EQ. Big Daddy should have some product/brand info to share !!!

I used a vintage Carver amp to power a 15" DIY subwoofer. The amp is rated 1,000 watts mono (bridged) into 8 ohms. The driver is 4 ohms. I figure the amp is good enough up to 1,500 watts into 4 ohm load. You can pick up one these amps on Ebay for around $300. These external amps are much better than the plate subwoofer amps and rarely break down.

Go to Post #613 of the DIY Subwoofer/Speaker Building thread. You can find pictures and additional information there.
