Default very new, but very interested

i know very little about fp but i was wondering if i should get a 720p or 1080p.
the room has no windows and painted dark brown. the throw distance is around 9-10 feet, and going for 100 in screen. just wondering if it is worth spending the extra money. The fp im looking at is the optoma hd20, is there any other options out there for under $1000? HELP!

With 102+ 1080p movies in your collection and a 100" screen in good lighting I would only be looking at 1080p units if it were me.

Any chance of stretching your budget for a Panny AE-PT2000U or AE-PT3000U?

its still kinda up in the air, finishing my basement so it would depend on how much is left. i was hoping to spend around 1500 for the fp and the screen

Not sure what one it is, but I think I saw an Optoma that was 1080p for $1,199 at best buy the other day..... You can certainly work a screen into the budget at that price......

I'd be most concerned with your limited throw range though. If you're finishing a basement, how is it that you're throw is so short?

there is actually a support beam in the way so i would have to put it on the one side of it.
unless i can move the beam, but im not sure if that is even an option

if i went the other way i would have around 14-15 feet of throw. Would the extra 5 feet make a huge difference?
forgive me, im new to this whole thing and dont want to spend a bunch of money on a fp and only be able to project a 60 in picture.
had my heart set on a 90-100 in but im guessing that wont be happening with my limited throw distance.

at 15 feet you could probably get around the image you are looking to do. But at only 9 or 10 you'll be getting a pretty small image. I would say go to projectorcentral.com and compare the different ones you are interested in. They have a throw calculator that will give you a fairly accurate number.

If you look in my gallery,my projector and screen was around $1500,although i think the fp was on sale at the time.I've been very pleased so far.Anyway,i would definitely get a 1080p,you could always do financing if you are a little short.

Here is the link to the throw distance calculator for the HD20. At 10' you could throw an 84" image. However, at 15' you could throw a 126" image.

Also, the HD20 is a bright projector, so a larger image should help black levels. At least if I understand what I read correctly. I'm fairly new at this myself, so if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

It's great for movies, but I usually shrink my image down to around 60" when playing fps, as it becomes harder to aim and just not die in general (especially when playing multiplayer). In fact I have a 23" 1080p lcd which sites around 3 feet away from me just for gaming (got it very cheaply on a clearance sale), which for all fps I use when playing multiplayer, and often use when I just want to watch a scene or two and cant justify turning on my projector (helps save bulb life etc...).

It's great for single player (extremely immersive), it's just if you play on such a large screen for multiplayer you usually die a lot more, and kill a lot less (in fps).

I would rather spend a bit more money on the projector than spending $500 on a screen in your case, you can always upgrade the screen at a later time. You should get a much better picture quality increase by spending the extra money on a better pj model. Also remember if you have limited throw distance you will be able to get a much larger image size with an LCD projector than most DLPs.

Oh, and gaming on a 100" screen is awesome, I could never go back
