Default Lossless audio

Since my AVR will only process lossless audio over an an optical cable(no HDMI). Does it mattter if I set the audio tracks in a blu ray movie to Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby/DTS?

Currently I set them as Dolby/DTS.

Lossless cannot travel over optical. You can only get lossless audio via HDMI or multi-channel out (both of which your receiver look like it lacks). Therefore, you can only listen to the "core" Dolby/DTS tracks on BD's.

Sorry.

Doesn't matter what you set the audio to, it will send the legacy track. You are SOL with that receiver, it doesn't even have mutli-channel inputs.

As noted, you can't get lossless with your equipment.

As for track selection, I'm not aware that any discs offer a choice between DTS and dts-MA. You get one or the other. If you play the dts-MA track, the player will bitstream the legacy DTS core over optical.

Some discs with TrueHD (Warner releases, in particular) offer a DD 5.1 track on the menu as well. It shouldn't matter which you select. If you select TrueHD, the player will output a DD 5.1 version instead.

you can do 2ch pcm over optical and that is lossless
if you want multi-ch, DTS is the closest you can get.

The AVR does have multi channel inputs. The blu ray player doesn't. I am SOL either way! Thanks for the help everyone.

The legacy tracks on Blu sound great. They are less compressed than the versions on DVD. So, it's not that big a deal.

The core tracks do sound good. Whenever you get to the point of upgrading, you'll find a lot of great mid-budget receivers that will add lossless audio decoding, auto setup and calibration, and 1080p video upscaling to your setup. You currently have a Pioneer, and they have some great mid-level options. Ditto for Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, and Onkyo.

I would like to get a newer AVR and sub. I just got new speakers so the wife wouldn't be happy with another purchase. In hindsight I should have gotten better equipment right from the start instead of buying clearance/cheaper equipment.

We all learn (Sometimes the more expensive way) and now you will have a much better idea of what to look for. You can still buy clearance gear, just know what your ultimate goal is going to be.

I've been through quite a few iterations of my system and each was a learning experience.
