When you select "normal" difficulty and it starts out nice and easy...some challenging parts here and there...some frustration due to having to restart from the last checkpoint every now and then...which is fine...then all of a sudden the game starts getting harder and harder making you wonder if the game somehow switched to the "it will take you the rest of your life to beat this" difficulty level???
Virgin gamer nerds may have 23 and a half energy drink induced gaming hours per day, but I don't have that kind of time to dedicate to beating a game. I like my games, but I also do have a life. |

Long cut scenes! MGS4 is remarkable in its variety of genres and is almost Tarantino-esque in its number of references, but by GOD it hardly trusts you to do anything! FElt like a movie often with the game aspect as an afterthought.
AFter that, ARkham Asylum was like poetry. With Arkham, I loved how your meters stay on screen during dialogue, so its not so jarring that control has been taken away from you. Which is my main pet peeve in games: when they take control away from you. Its a game! Let me do it! Best ever game IMO was Bioshock, because control is hardly ever taken away from you, and when it is, its meaningful and original; and all story is delivered in via audio recordings and written on walls and interior design etc. Fantastic. Respawning enemies. Worst ever was Far Cry 2. You'll clear a guard post, then drive back five minutes later and it'll be completely full of dudes again! Its like you can't have any kind of effect on the world. With Arkham, for example, enemies do respawn next time you enter an area, but the area will change through story developments, and the enemies may be different classes. Still, I like to make a difference, so something like Mercenaries 2 was great, because if I blew up a building, that building would stay blown up, damn it! It would be a smoking hole for the rest of the game! Goodies and treasure respawn, which was okay, but my main problem with Far Cry 2 was not random enemies respawning, but specific enemies at key points you're rewarded for clearing... When they respawn, you feel like you aren't getting anywhere! Again, great topic. I'm sure I'll have more to say about it. Last edited by bygberbrown; 10-24-2009 at 12:00 PM. |

Unskippable cut scenes!
![]() I like games having a challenge and I really don't mind dieing and having to go back through a level. But when I keep dying and then forced to watch a lame cut scene again and again... ![]() The most recent that comes to mind is the final boss in Dead Space. I keep dying and then getting forced to watch the boss' 3 minute long intro scene! What the hell?! I've seen it already let me skip it! What's most frustrating about this is that the developers could have so easily included a "skip" function in the code, but for some reason didn't. |

Which brings me to my next gripe. So technology is better? What is with the A.I. in almost every military type game now. You shoot one guy, take Battlefield Bad Company. You get on top of the mountain with the radio tower with a sniper rifle and you are miles away from the base at the foot of the mountain. You take one shot and the entire base knows immediately where to shoot within a second of shooting. I find that most games are like this. A more recent example, Uncharted 2. You are in cover, nobody can see you, and you toss a grenade. Surprise, they all know where you're hiding now. I'm finding this funny about Demon's Souls. When you start playing it seems so difficult. While most of the bosses are a piece of cake that can be killed safely from a distance with arrows. My last gripe, I dislike games that claim they are something, when it is the furthest thing from the truth. |

What about games that reload the enitre level again when you die. That is annoying. I play Super Mario Land on the DS when I go to bed and every time you die it takes you out of the world, just so you can press X again to continue the level. These things always take away that momentum you've got going. |

The problem with the majority of games this generation is that they haven't really moved forward from the previous gen. I feel as though I've played the same game from last time. Although there are some exceptions:
Red Faction Guerella: This game essentally centres around real time destruction. In the last gen, this sort of thing could be done, but it was very limited. Now with new technology, there have been major improvements, combined with a great physics engine. This kind of thing can only get better with the next generation. Crysis: This is in a way, similar to RFG in destruction, but adds to it lifelike graphics in an open world. This sort of thing is very difficult to pull of with in a single engine. I'm hoping that I'm explaining this right. |

I think content that should have been given with the game at launch and not offered as downloadable later is BS. I do praise games like Burnout for giving so much great extra content for free. Sure they eventually went with charging you, but there was a lot of great stuff for free.
Another gripe I have are the testers. It seems that more and more supposed great games are not even tested. The Force Unleashed is a prime example. I don't know how many times I got stuck in a wall, went through the floor for no reason, or the enemy bosses suddenly became stuck inside solid objects. That physics engine really kicks ass, so realistic indeed. Fail! |

I never had that issue with TFU.. But I agree I don't mind paying for DLC but when they do things like MW2 where they announce the DLC before the game comes out... come on. |

I hate not being able to play games because I am at work.
![]() I would have to say what I hate the most is graphical issues/glitches. An example of what I mean is Madden. When a player walks through a goal post, referee or another player. Just bugs me |

I miss the idea that fun is supposed to be the point of games.
Sometimes it seems like they get so caught up in how great the graphics look, or how many customization options are in the game, among other things, that they forget to check if the game is actually fun. I don't want games to feel like work. I don't want games to stress me out. When there were fewer games and I had more spare time, I used to play just about anything that seemed somewhat interesting. But now with more games and less time than ever, I'll give a game maybe an hour or so, and if I realize I'm not having fun, I'm done with it. I used to finish every game I started, but now I don't care. |
