Default Sony Bravia 46" V5100 auto-dim problem

Hey everyone,

So I bought my new Sony Bravia a month back or so and been living with this annoying issue where anytime the content on the screen becomes dark (or there isn't much) the TV automatically dims.

This is REALLY annoying in dark scenes of movies or even during the credits where everything goes dark, then suddenly something bright pops up and it un-dims the screen.

I can't seem to find any settings for turning this off, does anyone know how?

Thanks in advance

Try this.
Press the MENU button. Go to SETTINGS. Go to SETUP. Make sure the POWER SAVING and LIGHT SENSOR settings are both on OFF.

Yep I did that. Also I set the "Advanced Contrast Enhancer" to OFF as well. Still no fix.

I'm trying a firmware update to see if that solves anything.

Not sure what else to do. Sorry. I've never experienced dimming on my Bravia. Good luck though.

As a new W5100 owner I turned off the auto-dim light sensor but kept the ACE at "high"

I've noticed the dim when I stop playback & the Oppo screen appears.

As for viewing content (BD) the contrast shift is near seamless on mine. I tested it out with "First Contact" BD cause that film has frequent bright to dark, dark to bright scenes. Didn't notice any contrast wavering at all.

Update Your TV

Sony has designed the BRAVIA® Televisions software update process to be customer friendly. This software update (version ER4.11-E2) provides the following benefits:
  • Addresses an issue where the picture brightness changes intensity on some scenes.
Note: After the software update, please set Advanced Contrast Enhancer to LOW or OFF to further minimize this characteristic.
  • Addresses an issue with occasional intermittent operation when using favorites or HDMI-CEC functions.
  • Corrects an issue where the audio may infrequently be lost while connected via an HDMI connection.
  • Corrects an issue where there may be audio static when changing analog channels while connected via an RF (coax) connection.
  • Corrects an issue where the audio may be muted when resuming after using the timer.
  • Corrects an issue where there may be distorted blocks in the picture caused by incorrect encoding in the broadcast signal.
  • Corrects an issue where picture files may not show in the USB Photo Viewer after switching to a different input and then back to the USB input.
  • Improves menu navigation.
