Default need to ask cause i dont know, please help

hi all, i am buying a large speaker package from a guy and was wondering if i need an amp or not? for one i have never had an amp or never hooked one up before. couple of guys asked my about my speaker package and said i may need an amp. can i ask why and what would an amp do. i thought it was for more power, but would like more logic behind it. just want to understand it i guess.

i have an onkyo 606 now with my CSW sat setup running through it.

i have MC300 all up front and 2 S300 for rear channels and a P1000 sub (1000wts) in the front right corner.

what i am getting is in this thread i started in the speaker forum below:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=119313

any help would be appreciated and also if i do need an amp which ones are good and within a lower budget.
