Hello everyone
I looked through some of these threads and alot of you seem to know your stuff and i'm currently looking for an HDtv, around $1,500 to $1,700(40 inch or smaller for bedroom use, also preferably an LCD), these are the two brands that I trust but because i'm in a wheel chair and can't really go out and look for myself i'd like to get some opinions before I go ahead and buy something i'm not very experianced on, I keep hearing that Samsungs are looking better then Sony TVs these days and thats new news to me. I will be watching Blu-Rays obviously...with my PS3, umm... I may sound like a Sony ***** but haha, I just really like the idea of everything in my room matching this time, Sony TV, Sony Surround Sound and my PS3 so the Samsung ruins that for me, haha. i'm looking at this Sony Bravia V series tv tho(the model is KDL40V2500) if any of you have seen these and have looked at other tvs in comparison or something, i'd really really appreciate it. but thanks and sorry for the long post, haha |

Try searching user opinions at www.cnet.com . I have found their site to be very useful, as long as you take the time to read the user opinions.
Although models can vary, the best HDTVs I've seen are: 1. Pioneer 2. Samsung 3. Panasonic 4. Sony Honestly, I've never been overly impressed with Sony in the TV department. Overpriced for what you get. I suggest you look hard at this Samsung 1080p model, which I can vouch for is excellent for the money, and looks just gorgeous. I see amazon.com has it for $1699: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-a...tag=prod.txt.4 I'm not sure about this model, but you might also want to seek opinions on www.avsforum.com and see what they have to say. LOTS of LCD and Plasma people on there. I also remember reading that some Samsung models (along with just about every other brand) sometimes had issues with doing 1080p at 24fps. You should look into that. Last edited by baccusboy; 07-18-2007 at 01:55 PM. |

SAMSUNG!!! I used to be die hard SONY. Sony EVERYTHING. Now all I try to buy is Samsung... in my opinion is a slight step up from Sony. Try buying Samsung in Wal-Mart.
Oh... and my 1080p DLP HDTV is perfect. Never a single problem since October. If I could I would make love to it. ![]() |

1. Colour wheel - moving part was a reliability concern on my part 2. Wobulation - not because it was noticable to me but again another moving part that seemed failure prone over the long haul. I'm not saying 1 and 2 do have a reliability problem - just that more moving parts (at high speed) seemed it would be more likely to me down the road. And I believe this years models they went with some different technology so my issues in 1 and/or 2 may be moot..don't remember exactly. |

Being that Sony & Samsung use the same panel you are good either way.
I feel the Sony is the best LCD out there, but the Samsung is just as good and has more features for less money. If this was DLP vs. SXRD I would whole heartedly root for the SXRD because while the DLP's have a fabulous picture, even slightly better than the Sony....the geometry on a DLP is unacceptable. However we are talking LCD, and right now They are both good, Samsung is just the better Value, with the sexier looking cabinet designs (IMO). I say, Samsung! PS, Love my Samsung LN-S4696d 1080p LCD. ![]() |

BTBuck1 is right. Samsung makes the panels and other internals for the Sony's. Sony just assembles the "guts" provided by Samsung in the their ugly "silvery" cabinets. Samsung has the sweet gloss black look I prefer.

I'm not an expert and my opinion may be very different from others on this board. But, I'd advice you to go with the Sony. I had the same decision to make you did a few months ago and I decided to go with the Sony and this is why...
Disclaimer - only my opinions (if you disagree, please don't come after me) 1. You have to worry about the brightness on an LCD. When I compared the Samsung and the Sony side-by-side, I felt that the Samsung was too bright. The Sony had a better contrast and better dark areas than the Samsung. 2. I also compared the noise. I'm not blaming this on the TV, it could have been the disc, but I saw more background noise on the Samsung displays when I compared them. 3. Samsung has come along way in the last couple of years, but I feel that Sony has an established name with a longer history of making quality products. Yes, you do have to pay a premium for the Sony, but you're also getting a great product. I have the Sony XBR3 and I couldn't be happier. It is, in my opinion, the best picture I've seen other than the Pioneer Elite (which is in another class). I'd go with the Sony; that's my two cents on the situation... Good luck with the purchase regardless. I hope you're happy with what you end up getting! |

No matter what set, make sure you have a 30 day return policy. But my vote would go for the Samsung. Although if you see the rainbow effect then DLP sets are out.

I was faced with the same choice a couple months back, main difference was i didnt have a budget and spent time in the stores determening quality over price factor.
I ended up with the sony - reason being is that the samsung's internal processing just didnt cut it heavier/more noticable grain and some wierd over digitized processing occurs on the samsungs, plus the colors seemed more natural on the sony. I tried so hard to like the newest samsung lcd due to it's higher rated contrast ratio and its ability to do true 24hz motion which the braviax series dont have, plus hdmi 1.3 input, but no matter what the sony looked better and better the more i viewed it. The samsung screen seemed too glossy/reflective and that got just a bit distracting, since lcd's are meant to be anti glare/reflective (these where one of the features that plasma didnt have, and its what made lcd's more appealing). Anyway not to confuse you, in the end you want something cheap and not nasty, correct? that can hold it's own and has a decent reliability factor? and the only thing i can say is get the samsung, price and its features and near perfect quality seems to be the most appealing, but for quality id stick with sony (let your eyes be the judge). |

This is a very timely question. Only today, they've released a comparison between the Sony, Toshiba, and Samsung Panels here.
They seem to lean towards the Toshiba (and I don't doubt their honesty as they are certainly not one of these websites who are cosied up to Microsoft or HD-DUD). If you do accept their findings, then it leaves with the moral dilema of do a buy from a company that is needlessly and damagingly prolonging the format war? |

i have both. A 40" samsung 1080p and 46" Now I have the Sony XBR2 40". No clouding issues. The blacks don't look as good on the sony, but the colors like red, blue, green are superior on the sony. Plus standard definition cable looks much better on the sony than the samsung. (in my humble opinion) i love both brands. should love the samsung more since i myself am korean. but lets just say Sony is my living room/blu-ray TV. Samsung are my bedroom/xbox 360 tvs. |

sharp lcd's have a known color banding issue (do a google search and see what i mean) - seems they toned down on the panels color ability and boosted the response time of the unit which is pretty darn impressive - 4ms - 6ms depending on source. |
