I'm tempted to pre-order this release before reading any reviews. The French DVD release of Phantom of the Paradise was the best release worldwide, and it had plenty of extra features not available anywhere else.

If it doesn't have non-removable French subtitles, and it includes all extras from the DVD release, it's sure to be a worthwhile release.

WOW it's finally coming! I have the French original DVD release and love it. I'm curious if the Blu-ray will have region restrictions, and if so, would there be anyway to play it on PS3?

Got mine yesterday.

I switched my Oppo to Region A and had no problems loading it. I was watching this on a Panasonic plasma which tends to flatter defects so anyone watching on a 60" Pioneer or a 12 foot screen may well see problems I didn't. Menus Aren't as good as the double DVD but are clear and efficient. All extras apart from the filmography and awful music video are present. They are all in SD PAL (according to my Oppo) and have forced French subs (weird as the DVD didn't). I really like this film and last watched it on DVD three weeks ago before I knew about the blu. At the time I was impressed by how well it upscaled and how good the soundtrack was. What a difference three weeks makes. In comparison the DVD now looks hazy, dull and grainy. Bearing in mind the film is 35 years old they've done a splendid job with it, there's a considerable increase in detail and the colour has greater range and subtlety. Grain is present but seems less obvious than the DVD. I can't tell whether suppression has been used but faces still have plenty of wrinkles and blemishes and don't look like waxworks to me. I noticed a lot of detail I've never seen before in clothing, backgrounds and so forth which, to me, is the sign of a good blu. Interestingly the brief French subtitles during the newspaper headlines are no longer burnt in. Bit rate is a solid 25-30mbps The film starts with French 2.0 DTS HDMA English 5.1 DTS HDMA and French subs can be disabled with the remote. I was listening on Sennheiser SD25-1 II headphones (it was late) which are very accurate and the soundtrack is a considerable improvement, the separation was good enough that during the bomb in the car sequence I could hear the ticking, the dialogue and the music clearly and precisely. The original English 2.0 track hasn't made it to the blu which is a bit of a pity.

Pros: Great picture (for the age of it) and sound.
Cons: No English 2.0, compulsory French subs on extras.

Worth the money? "You don't know how right you are, Goliath"

I watched my disc yesterday, and it's certainly a worthwhile release. I did notice a couple of small scenes which had a significant decrease in PQ (almost as if they were inserted from lower quality prints). These were very brief moments, and I only noticed them because the quality overall was pretty good.

I'm sure the film can look better with a better restoration (and I did notice a bit of print damage), but judging from the treatment the film received on DVD by Fox that's not very likely to happen. It's a shame, since it's a very enjoyable film.

. . . received mine today and it looks very good, it shows Region A, B, and C - regarding the subtitles, it seems you can either watch the film in French, or English with forced titles; I could not find how to disable the subtitles . . .

Simply start the film, and press the subtitles button on your remote to select "subtitles off". They are not unremovable during the film (but you can't remove them for the special features).

Curious about two things:
So this release can be played on a Region A PS3? I read that the special features are in PAL.

Also, can you or can you not remove the subtitles?

Big time De Palma fan, hope to get this release soon.

. . . as Funktion explained to me, the subtitles can be removed with the "subtitles" button on your remote, there is no way to do it on the DVD itself . . . I don't have a PS3 so cannot help on that issue . . .

Got my copy in the mail yesterday and played it in my region 1 PS3 player and the film was fine, but I could NOT access any of the bonus material at all! I think it out does the DVD in image but let down I can't watch the making of, I wanted to see that more than the film.

Interesting maybe it will give a push for a US release with the bonus features for a US BD release, it would be a good release side by side to Rocky Horror on BD when that comes.

I believe the extras are in PAL format, which explains why you are having problems playing them on a US PS3.
It's a shame, the documentary is quite lengthy and is actually quite interesting, full of info and interviews with actors, director, and production crew.

Nah, that's nonsense. No truth to that at all, despite what IMDB says. There's an effort to get a stage production underway, but nobody need worry about a remake.
