Default Replace Subwoofer

Hi, my subwoofer has started to have a deep crackle and I believe it has broken. I'm looking to replace the subwoofer. Is there anything I need to know to replace it; like frequency or watts necessary?

Was the subwoofer part of a home-theater-in-a-box, or was it a stand-alone unit you got separately?

Which home theater in a box specifically? Some of these systems are upgradeable (namely Onkyo), but many aren't.

This one may be a little tricky. From what I can tell from your owner's manual, it looks like this system utilizes a passive subwoofer. Most of the better subwoofers out there today are active. That means they have their own amplifier and don't rely on power from the receiver. There are good passive subs out there (I thought SVS made some, but I don't see any on their site), but IMO if you're going to bother upgrading or replacing anything, it would be best to start with a new receiver, and a front set of speakers and add to the system as you go unless you're able to swing the cost of an entire setup at one time. If you don't want to do that, then my recommendation would be to contact LG and see if you can get a replacement.

My subwoofer does say it supports up to 450 watts and 3 ohms. Couldn't I just get a subwoofer within that range?

Red and black wires. Also, would it be possible to get a new HD receiver for this unit and have the speakers still function?

as far as your speakers & A new receiver , That depends on the Ohms rating of the speakers . Most of the new receivers are made for 8 Ohms .Putting speakers that are less than that can be hard on the receiver .
subs you Buy separately are hooked up by A RCA cable ,so that could be A problem without A new receiver .

Ahh, the first symptoms of "upgrade-itis" are starting to set in. People take note - this is about the exact moment of its onset.

But seriously, Connor, you are on the road to bigger and better things. The passive sub in your HTIB, driven by the system amplifier, is easy to overdrive - at best. You could try contacting LG retailer, or LG directly, about a replacement sub, but chances are, unless you can keep the volume down, you'll likely burn another one.

Even a new, modest home theater receiver, combined with an inexpensive active subwoofer, will produce more robust sound than the vast majority of HTIBs. I would not recommend using your HTIB speakers with a new home theater receiver, as their impedance rating is probably too low (3- or 4-ohms for HTIB speakers). Most inexpensive home theater receivers are rated for 8-ohm speakers, perhaps going down to 6-ohms.

As crazyBLUE suggested, even a 2-channel system - 2 reasonably nice speakers and a home theater receiver, is a great start to an overall system.

What would the best system be with no more then $200 each for the subwoofer and the receiver and the 4 speakers?

I've been looking and I'm not sure if I want to buy anything right now. I would like to make sure its broke first? Is there a way for me to test the passive subwoofer I have.

You're saying it's crackling...if it aint broke yet, it's getting there. Like stated earlier, if you really want to get improved performance you need to ditch the HTIB and build yourself a system. Good Luck
