Default Interesting Analyst speculation on PS3 hitting $399?

http://news.portalit.net/fullnews_PlayStation-3-80-GB-Model-To-Cost-$499,-Says-Analyst_2820.html

If I remember past news correctly, these Wedbush guys are pretty good at predicting these price moves/console releases. $399 PS3 sometime next year? "Pack your bags, boys - War's over"

Not necessarily, with Halo 3 coming and 360's price drop sure to come this holiday season.

Doubt the war will be won, but it will for sure bring the PS3 into many more homes!

If this happens, it would probably be around XMas next year (over a year away). I could maybe see that...possibly.

That seems like a pretty reasonable prediction. "Early next year" is anywhere between 6 and 9-10 months from now, they should be able to cut their production costs quite a bit by then, leaving them in a good position for another price drop. It only took them 8 months for the first $100 cut.

Should Microsoft decide to get in this battle they can drop the 360 price left in right over the PS3... They can actually get the price point to 200 should they care. Not having a HD format will prove to be the PS3's strength this gen, but it will cost a little more..

I think you are wrong on this. Mr. Softy is already pushed to the brink by their unimaginable replacement costs. They cannot move too much on price w/o severely compromising the bootm line and they are not really interested in HD-DVD anyway as we are learning. They compete w/ PS3 solely on the basis of gaming consoles, and Sony has done an awful job at making the critical differentiation for consumers that the PS3 is the only choice if you want both a game console AND an HD capability movie player.

I think the quality problems and charges now make that very difficult or they are leaving themselves open to more monopoly type charges for dumping products on the market.

I agree low balling pricing has always been their strategy...it's the root of their quality problems. But the fallout from that approach may now be getting in the way of that *overall* day 1 strategy..In fact I would hazard a guess to say that Peter Moores departure may have to do more with him mucking up that overall strategy than even the public perception damage created from it..

The Blu-ray diode price is dropping in a fast pace.
And I am convinced other components in the PS3 are dropping in price as well.

Plus the fact that, Sony is'nt affraid of selling the PS3 unit with a loss, I think it is possible.

If they can run at $499 for the holidays, I think that's perfectly acceptable and reasonable given the kind of hardware in this machine and what it can do.

... and $499 for the holidays probably means $399 by mid-08, which should be a reasonable target price for the "true next gen" consoles.

IMO i think 399 is underpriced for how relatively new the PS3 is and the many features it has! 499 seems to fit the bill perfect (IMO). The cheaper the better of course, but I didn't expect it to fall to 499 already, let alone speculation of a first/second quarter 08 price drop.

this is what I've been saying ....

another price drop 9 months from now isn't unreasonable because the production costs for the BD player will drop significantly between now and then..
