Default PS3 vs. BDP-S300

Can anyone offer a little insight???? I have a PS3, and I think the PQ on it is amazing. I have it runningthrough an HD home theatre system, and viewing on a 50" sxrd. My quandry is wether or not I should jump on the deal right now for the 2nd gen BDP- S300, or wait and see what Santa might bring. If anyone has both, can you tell me if you see a noticeable difference, aside from the audio? Right now, the addition of the 1.3 sound is really the only difference i can tell. Thanks!!

I owned a BD-P1000, now have the 60gig PS3.

I feel comfortable with the fact that the PS3 will continue to be near the top and thats why I bought it. Instead of upgrading every few generations, my PS3 will be upgraded with new software that keeps it up to date. Thats a great advantage of it having software based video instead of strictly hardware like a dedicated player.

I personally think youll be fine with the PS3 unless you just want a 2nd player.

I think they BD-P1200 has the best PQ out there right now. Good thing is the PS3 is consistently in the top, and I think as the standalones improve, the PS3 software guys will keep the PS3 player looking its best too.

To me the biggest plus of a PS3 over a stand alone:

Wifi
Net Surfing
Streaming of video, pics and music to your HDTV

Oh yeah, and you can even play games

I still love the people that say everyone bought a ps3 to game. Thats actually the last reason I bought mine.

I guess my main question is still.....Am I missing out on quality of experience by not having the ability to have even 1.2 coming off of my blu ray player? My PS3 runs through my home theatre now, and sounds amazing, just wanting to make sure that I am set for awhile, so I can focus on buying more blu ray discs...

ps3 is 1.3 but word on the streets is, it may never be able to bitstream the next gen audio, so besides x.v.color...whats the point?

I don't know that ps3 has the ability (hardware inside) to decode DTSHDMA either, so it may be slightly handicapped in the year ahead to other players comming.

I can wholeheartedly reccomend the ps3, but their could be some *****in standalones comming.
The new sharp BD player ad samsung allegedly decode DTSHDMA in player.
This would put these at the top of the list for me.

Same here. I bought mine for a BD player and I happen to play a couple sports games on it. I'm hooked on MLB 2K7 right now. Go Tigers.

I understand that Dolby TrueHD can be converted to PCM. I wonder is something lost in the conversion? I hope DTS-Ma is provided in a future upgrade.

I have owned the PS3, Sony S300 and now the Samsung P1200. After testing them for a couple weeks, I decided to keep only the Samsung P1200.

Here's why:

The PS3 is the fastest Blu Ray player out there. Just as fas as a regular DVD player. BUT, the audio features are weak compare to the stand alone players. Also, it didn't have the resume playback feature after you power the unit off. That means, that if you are watching a BD movie and you can't finish it for whatever reasons, if you turn the unit off, the next time you power the unit on, the movie will start from the begining, menus and all. That, at least to me, is a deal breaker.

The S300 was a nightmare to me. Just to power the unit on will take at least 40 seconds, and to load a BD disc is another 20 seconds to 2 1/2 minutes depending of the BD disc. The new POTC discs will drive someone insane with the long loading time that seems to go on forever! It takes 2 1/2 mins just to load these movies. Crazy. Also, it does not have the resume playback feature after the unit has been powered off. Just like its PS3 brother.

The Samsung P1200 was the overall better performer. The loading time is a lot quicker than the S300. The POTC discs loaded on this unit just under 50 seconds. A big difference from the S300. This unit also has the resume playback feature that the PS3 and S300 lacks. The only problem I had with this unit was with Deja Vu. This movie for some reason freezes on this player. It did not freeze on the PS3 or S300. I called Samsung and they said they are working on a fix. Other than that, this unit has been flawless.

So, having experienced these blu ray players, I can honestly recommend the Samsung P1200 for those of you who are looking to jump into Blu Ray and are undecided on what to buy.

P.S. The picture quality on these players are almost identical. You won't be able to tell the difference. At least on my eyes.

If the Sharp really has those insanely fast load times and DTS HD-MA I think my PS3 will go to the kids room

Default PS3's future functional upgrade

According to Japanease most popular audio-visual magazine "HiVi", SCE and SONY's engineers have told to a magazine's main writer about future firmware update plan of PS3.

They've told him that "Blu-ray full-profile support" is to acqire untill the end of this year. And "DTS-HD(MA) on board decode" is not on the wish list, but on the progressing facts list. CD playback upsampling, also.
The other functional enhancements are arguing. For example, P&A quality enhancement of the Blu-ray playback by using surplus Cell power.

I just watched my first upconverted movie last night(Hannibal Rising) and I can say the PS3 upconvert is phenomenal IMHO.

Should be watching my first full BR tomorrow night(Flags of our Fathers).

I am not sad for one moment I sold my BDP1000 on ebay.
