HDMI Pass-through?

What does HDMI Pass-through mean>?> I am looking at a new reciever, Yamaha RX-V863BL, but it says it doesnt have HDMI Pass-through...

What exactly does this mean? Do I need it?

pass through means.... pass through to the tv. what you want is a repeater. usually receivers with hdmi pass through will also state that a seperate connection is required for audio

i looked at the specs and it decodes hd audio. i would say its a hdmi repeater. it will still pass the video through to the tv. if you chose this receiver your good to go

Pass-through will "passthrough" the video/audio through the AVR and will not touch the info sent. Therefore, you would have to run a seperate optical cable to the AVR for Audio.

Higher level AVR's usually can read or decode the video/audio. For video it might be able to upscale for example. For audio it can read the audio and play it (either as a LPCM signal or decoding when you bitstream from the player).

the link shows two receiers. one with pass through one without and both decode hd audio. this is an error unless pass through means something else to yamaha. if it can decode hd audio, you have a repeater since it will output pcm audio.

My Yamaha uses the term "passthrough" as well and decodes audio and all that jazz. It is a misleading term as other brands have different definitions.

Yeah, I believe the low end Sony's will say passthrough, but they still process the audio and only pass through the video.

couple years ago the norm or standard was that if it was passthrough, it cant output pcm audio or any audio from the receiver. i beleive errors on mfg sites changed that. sony is one to be known to have errors on thier specs. never checked out yamahas though. even crutchfield had in thier descriptions the term passthrough then '(a seperate audio connection is required)'

yup, Yamahas as well have this issue. I think the 4 series all the way up lists it as "passthrough" although it will decode and cary audio and/or video

thanks for the help guys. So all in all.... it will ply Dolby True HD and it is basically a spec error... good stuff... going to pick this up when i go home
