United Kingdom Brotherhood of the Wolf

Brotherhood of the Wolf Blu-ray

Brotherhood of the Wolf Blu-ray Review

Set to be released in the UK on March 1, 2010. Courtesy of Optimum Home Entertainment.

Variety:
Quote:
A little Sergio Leone here, a little "Sleepy Hollow" there, a grand helping of late royal-era Gaul with its wigs and finery, and, uh, martial arts-style confrontations galore are all deftly melded in "Brotherhood of the Wolf," an attempt to elucidate the French urban legend of the so-called Beast of Gevaudan -- a giant, invincible, wolf-like creature that killed more than 100 people in the 1760s. Highbrow crix may gnash their teeth, but this is a home-grown French actioner that wears its sincere desire to entertain on its flamboyantly tailored sleeve.

Hmm I wonder if its gonna be anything more than a port of the Optimum HD DVD release.

Was that the case with the Studio Canal release? If not, why wouldn't this simply be a port of that one?

Any chance Optimum will make this region-free, unlike the Studio Canal release?

all of Optimum's releases are certainly NOT locked.
some are, many are not.
It is a case by case basis.
"Escape From NY", "Le Mepris", and "La Haine" are not locked.
there are plenty more examples.
btw: I would say the chances are like 99.99999999% that BoTW will be the exact same as the French HD DVD.

Actually, Arkadin, there are only a couple of discs that are Region-Free (Escape from New York is one of them). The other, including the ones you mention above, are not - they are "locked" to Regions A/B. So, if you live in a Region-C territory, let's say India, and have only a Region-C player, these would be unplayable (both "Le mepris" and "La Haine" are "locked" to Regions A/B).

As to the UK release of Brotherhood of the Wolf being playable in the U.S., we would have to wait and see - if it turns out to be one of those multi-region releases, covering Japan, which is a Region-A territory, then yes, it will be playable in the U.S. (Note: Many of Canal's recent catalog titles have been encoded like that).

thanks for that addendum.
I guess I was just thinking playable in region A and B instead of truly region free.
so I should have been more precise.

I believe you meant to address your second paragraph to the UK release?

jmcy2k,

You are correct - I meant the upcoming UK release by Optimum.

Should be a port of the French disc, which is English friendly.

Or anyone for that matter, do you know if the Lionsgate/StudioCanal announcement will have any bearing on the Wolf being released in the US?

As of yet, have not heard from them. They probably think one little person doesn't matter. It really anoys me when they can't take 2 min. to respond

Amazon UK still showing the pre-order. Hopefully we'll learn if it's zone-free, and if so I'll import a copy :

Hello,

It is basically guaranteed that the disc would be Region-B "locked". The Studio Canal release was, and Optimum Home Entertainment are only licensing the same transfer. I would strongly recommend that you do not pre-order this release hoping that it turns out to be Region-Free. It won't be.
