SACD Help - Blu-ray Forum

I have the 60gig PS3 that plays SACD's but don't have any SACD's yet and have never heard how they sound. So I am wondering if my PS3 with HDMI will sound as good as a SACD player with its audio connections. And how much better does a SACD actually sound compared to regular CD's?

your SACD'S will sound better than cd's yes, but, they won't sound as good as say my Oppo bluray player because the PS3 (only the version of the ps3 that supports SACD of course) doesn't support DSD over HDMI. the ps3 will convert the SACD's to PCM. My oppo will stream the SACD's in their native DSD format to my receiver that supports DSD so, i'm getting the purest SACD experience.

again, your SACD's will sound really good, so don't get me wrong, they just won't be in their native DSD. I do love listening to my SACD's too!

So the BDP-83 does support DSD over HDMI? I am sold now. I was not sure about it, but that kinda seals the deal.

Shouldn't matter much for 5.1 surround SACD but for 2-channel (no LFE) there will be more impact if you don't have full range speakers. Lots depends on how much bass managment you are depending on. With PCM streamed, you won't get the benefits of base management done by your receiver's processor. I think the dirty secret is that most processors convert to PCM anyway before outputting the DACs because that's where the acoustics enhancements are done like with Pioneer's MCACC or Anthem's ARC.

Check audiogon.com for good deals on great equipment. Buying new to experiment hurts.

yes, it supports DSD over HDMI and it also outputs DSD via 2 channel or multichannel flavors in analog

i am very happy with it. Billy Joel's "The Stranger" has never, ever sounded this good and SACD multichannel DSD really opened it up for me!

What kind of music do you listen to? Check out http://sa-cd.net/ to see what's available on SACD before buying another player.

Make sure your processor (receiver) supports processing DSD.
