Angry No Blu until X-Mas?? (Local Blockbuster)

So I was at my local blockbuster yesterday (Northern VA). I asked the manager when they would be getting their blu-ray disks in. He replied, "Actually, not until Christmas. The stores that received the blu-ray rollout so far are doing very poorly in BD rentals so not until December at the earliest".

Anyone else get this response? Can anyone comment on the availablity of BD rentals in the stores that did get rolled out? Were they fully stocked? Were they all checked out? Partially checked out?

Say it aint so. :-(

Default Bb

i was just at my local BB after switching from gameznflix to bb's online access and they did not have any BD's, only ps3 games. the manager informed me that only the higher volume stores are getting BD's. he said they will eventually get some, but he didn't know when.

There are two near me that have BDs, one was part of the original 250, the other was part of the rollout. Now, in the new release section, there's a rack w/ a big blu-ray sign and about 30 or so movies in the rollout store. The original store has a separate section in the middle for both formats.

When I go in, they are partially rented out. The problem I see is that they don't have too many good movies. Titles like Casino Royale and The Prestige are always gone, but then they've got horrible movies (at least in my opinion), so of course those won't get rented. People aren't going to rent a bad movie just because it's on BD.

Another issue is that w/ BBuster's "no late fees" policy and the one week grace period, people can keep those top titles out for longer, and I think they've only got one copy of each.

Impressive since I believe the roll-out of BD rental stores didn't happen until this week. How can the manager get such great indicative data that BD rental is not doing well?

I'm from Northern Virginia (Arlington), and I call BS. Since the rollout only happened last week, the employees at the couple of stores around me have told me they've not had enough time to say whether or not they're renting Blu-rays well or not.

An post about an obvious fake trend based on thinking we were stupid enough not to know when the deal started, combined with only 2 posts and very recent join date? Hmmm...

I'm really sorry guys. It's really not like that. Let me introduce myself.

My name is Bruce. I read the forums and follow the "war" on a daily basis.
I've been watching beautiful blu since I bought my PS3 (60G) in January. I absolutly love it and do not at all understand why anyone would want HD DVD with the lack of studio support, disk size, and player manufacturrs. I'm more of an observer on these boards and I posted yesterday for the first time because I really had something to post about. I'm sorry it had to be negative, but I just wanted to make sure that what I was told was not the truth. Once again, diddnt mean to come at you guys that way. Sorry! I love BD!

PS: The store I visitited was in Chantilly VA. The number there is (703) 263-0604. Feel free to call and ask them what I did.

OK, welcome and it's good to have you here. If your location is not getting Blu-rays until December it's most likely a franchise location. The particular BB I have decided to do business with is in (or near?) Columbia, Maryland (off Dobbin lane). That location must have been one of the original "pilot" stores since they carry both Blu-ray and HD-DVD rentals in equal amounts (about 80 each). The manager there told me that they have quite a bit of additional Blu-ray titles ("in the back") that they will also putting out once they get their new Blu-ray display area cleared and set up. He also said that the Blu-ray rentals have been significantly better than the HD-DVD rentals.

I would question the original post just because the manager of a single store usually knows squat about what's happening at their own store, let alone what is going to happen at other stores. I called up nearly every single manager of the stores (all corporate stores) in the Denver metro area before the rollout happened to see which was getting BD. Over 50% didn't even know about the 1700 stores getting BD. Some said, oh Blockbuster isn't getting BD for a couple years at least. Finally I got a number to the regional corporate headquarters that actually had information. She gave me the list of all the stores in the area getting BD. I asked about further expansion to the other stores and she said it won't happen for a couple of months. This is basically phase 2 of their test. If BD does well at these new stores, then you can expect the rest to get them but no time tables have been set.

Cool

even if it is so, these things take some time to grow, especially in smaller centers. I think rentals will do well though. or Blockbuster wouldn't have expanded beyond their 250 stores in the first place. It'll be up to the stores to make the consumer aware that Blu-ray is available to rent. Hopefully they don't display them at some far away corner. they should display them with the PS3 games at first. That would probably generate some interest.

NoVa is the place to be it seems. I asked my wife to start checking and explained what is going on. Usually she returns the BB Online rentals to the store down the street from us in Woodbrige VA on Rt. 1. I will report back with what she finds out.

Blockbuster in Sandy, Ut has a lot of bluray. They have about 60 of the newer titles, and then they have about 180 of the older movies in another section. Probably about 30% or so rented out. But still lots to choose from. One of each title, but that will grow. One of the workers said that rentals are picking up nicely.

Unfortunately, the original plan is to slowly roll out to all the stores. The early stores already have them. The laggards are not planned to get fully set up until the late November/early December time frame. It is based upon a stupid metric BlockBuster set up. If you don't believe this that's just not facing reality.

However, stores can (and some have!) petition to get set up with Blu-ray much earlier. I personally know of a store that has petitioned and has moved in the line up from December to a couple months earlier and they are still pressing to move to even sooner... Meanwhile not too far away another store already has Blu-ray on the shelves.

We'll just have to see how this really rolls out.
