Default Voltage question?

Ok, I found my old external Maxtor HDD drive that my dad gave me back in 2004. It does not have the original cords with it. I was looking at it and it has:

12V 3 and it's symbol is:
___
. . .

Now, my Maxtor external that I got last October has:

12V 2 and it's symbol is:

___
. . .

They are the same except the new one is a 2 and the old is a 3. Does that matter because I want to hook this thing up and see if it works.

It shouldn't matter. The voltage is right, so give it a try. I have no idea what the 2 and 3 mean, and have never seen that before. Maybe its indicative of the size of the AC adapter plug, but I have no idea.

Give it a shot, it should be fine.

I'm cautious towards it. I think it might mean plug size, but I got the plug from my new external to fit in it, but I did not plug it in to see if it worked incase if it might fry it or something. I tried my power cord from my LiteON External BD Drive and it doesn't fit it. It says: 12V 1 on it.
