PSN plans premium subscriptions, online play remains free - Blu-ray Forum

So, the meat of it is that online play will remain free, but that it will be added to with this new subscription that Sony's hoping to conjure, whatever that may entail. Hopefully it will be like Qore -- inherently useless, meaning people who just want to play online won't feel they're missing something.

It will be interesting finding out exactly how Sony expects to swindle some cash for itself with this new venture.

Well, I'm just glad they're keeping all the stuff we have right now for free. And thats a good thing.

This doesn't necessarily mean the currently free online service will start charging its users at some point during this next year. It's far more likely that the line in the report was referring to new subscription-based features, such as the PSP rental service or one of SOE's upcoming MMOs.

Is this anything like the spam forwards that go around on the psn? Having free online is one reason I dumped Xbox for the ps3.

So it's just the idea that everything offered is free that you like. Not that you're getting free what SHOULD be free?

Well if everything thats currently free remains so, and they're just giving people the option of paying for enhanced features or content, thats fine with me. Isnt that basically what Qore is right now?

If it included some PSN Video Store rentals--such that I could consider dropping Netflix--I'd be willing to hear more.

I was going to ask what they meant by that, thanks for clearing that up.

I don't know what they will charge for though if what we have now is going to be free. I hope you don't have to pay for Home subscription or PS store.

In his defense, Shin-ra did go over a mod's boundaries and attack him first. But I get it, he had a bad day, I hope things improve for him today.

If they charged for Home I'd NEVER go there anymore. Unless the subscription for Home means they would totally revamp Home.

I won't count on that. Sony said that all the features we have right now are still going to be free. No subscriptions for Home or any of that.
