Default Will DVD's look better?

If you purchase a blu ray player will current dvd's look better on High Def TV?

And off topic component or HDMI for playing dvd's on hd?

An HDTV uses many techniques to improve picture quality, so probably yeah.

Erm, DVDs will never playback HD I remembered... However, there are DVD players that support HDMI connectors.

The use of the HDMI connection itself will hardly improve anything when you switch from a scart or a YUV connection. If you switch from a component connection to an HDMI connection, you will see the difference, but the picture quality won't match true HD.

In theory yes. But I wouldn't spent my money to buy a new player. Just wait for a BD player with a HDMI connection, DVD will be supported on that machine too.

Mmm... I don't know. If you want to... However it won't be much. If you enjoy your DVDs now and you don't feel anything for an upgrade, keep your current cabling. If you want to do it... You do it. It's your choise m8

Sorry No - your DVD's will not look better with a BD player on a HD TV - unless a "cheap" CRT.
Plasma, DLP, LCD and other related technologies all have to convert the signal to their NATIVE resolution (there are going to be a lot of very disappointed people around that have bought TV's that can handle inputs of 1080i with a native resolution of 800 x 600) so a normal DVD will be being up converted by the TV with electronic trickery (and it's quite good - until you see the real thing) at the moment. A BD player will most probably have those smarts in it as well - as well as going the other way 1080p - (presumably 720p & maybe even PAL & NTSC).

If rumours are correct (I HOPE NOT) HD can only be transmitted over HDMI (This not a technical issue but a political problem) so presumably all up converted signals are technically a pretend HD - so go straight to HDMI do not pass go do not collect $200! Certainly HD will look better over HDMI - even if HD can be sent over Componenet not for Bandwidth reasons but Component is analogue - so the signal will have to converted (loss of quality) then converted back to digital (loss of quality again). However if from a DVD source I doubt anyone will pick the difference - if you want to get better quality out of DVD go for PAL mastered DVD's (and a player that can output PAL assuming your TV (monitor) can accept a PAL input.

I will have to look more into this pal thing. I was not aware of it. I am trying to get the best out of my dvd's on an LCD high def projector. Panasonic ae900 to be exact. Are all dvd's PAL? or only certain ones? The quality of dvd's on high def isnt very good at all as I am sure you are aware.

PAL is the European (with some exceptions) Australia and some other countries. There is approx a 20% horizontal resolution increase. But I wouldn't waste your money - just wait 9 months (or so)

Actually with the Sony and other Blu Ray players...there will be 1080p up scaling of sd dvd ...so this should actually make your sd dvd look better on a 1080p hdtv display.

Yup, it will. But please don't think it'll be as good as Blu-ray or as true HD.
Thanks

Yep....sd up scaling to 1080p is not going to give you say....dvhs quality by any means, but it might look a bit better than 720/1080i sd up scaling that we currently get from our up scaling sd dvd players.

I just sold my last 11 dvhs tapes, and I am chomping at the bit for BD.
