Hungary Kontroll (Hungary)

A very good friend of mine has informed me that Nimród Antal's Kontroll (2003) has just been released on Blu-ray in Hungary. Winner of the Award of the Youth at the Cannes Film Festival.

Official Hungarian site and trailer:

Fantastic news, Pro-B! This is an incredible film. I have the Hungarian deluxe DVD edition, but methinks I'll be on the hunt for the BD. It appears that Europe is where all the exciting things in blu-ray are happening (and Criterion, of course).

Hello Ted,

I also have the double (black) DVD set, but would love to own this fantastic film on BD.

Unfortunately, it appears that the company I ordered the DVD from, filmsarok.hu (I think), is no longer in business, or their website is offline.

Don't worry, Ted. I just need to confirm the specs. If this disc is English-friendly (as was the SDVD), we would find a vendor that ships to the U.S.

Here's the actual cover art:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but several websites [1 | 2 | 3] indicate that this release only contains Hungarian subtitles.

This is one of my fav Hungarian movie

Some information: the picture is "just" 1080i and the disc really doesn't contain any other subs than Hungarian. Dunno why, it is a pretty stupid decision from the studio, the DVD version had 4 subs (English, French, German, Hungarian).

Btw I will the get BD on Friday, after i can post some screenshots if you are interested.

Oh, and its really good to see that many people know and like Nimród's movie.

Good evening,

Yes, unfortunately the Blu-ray disc is not English-friendly.

That's a real shame. I doubt this one will see an english subbed blu then. Given the shoddy state of both the US and the UK DVD releases, it's highly unlikely it will ever get the HD treatment here.

I'd bet it come sooner or later since Nimrod Antal is making Predators and most recently did Armored and Vacancy a few years back. I'm sure it'll come soon if he does some more bigger budgeted features.

I was in Budapest recently and I nearly exploded when I saw the BR of Kontroll (as I own the hungarian special DVD edition- love the movie). I screamed of despair one second afterwards when i discovered there was no trace of english subs.
I asked the guy at the shop where I was (which was the big Media Markt at the West End Mall) and he told me this : as Nimrod Antall went to H'wood after Kontroll, the company which owned the rights of Kontroll decided to go Blu without english subs in order to sell the rights better to companies outside Hungary... i dunno if it's true, but it resembles to the Toho policy for the Godzilla movies.

This makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever: so by NOT having english subtitles on the disc, it will sell BETTER?!? And how does this improve the odds of selling the rights to companies outside Hungary, much less specifically to a Hollywood based company? You know, since Antel is going to Hollywood?

I know Superwonderscope you don't have any power over this issue; any frustration I have (and I am sure others too) is strickly towards the production company.

Well, as the BR business is just burgeonning in Hungary, i guess they still wandering what to do (or not).
I bought two hungarian movies in BR : Valami Amerika 2 and Made in Hungaria. And they are technically mediocre at best (and I'm not talking about the movies themselves).
I haven't seen the copy of Kontroll but from what the guy at mediamakt told me, beware of hight expectations.
What i'm sure of : if it's the same quality level as the two other titles I mentionned, I'm puzzled. It's still better than DVD but it's not the quality expected from a Blu Ray.

I've never heard of this movie before, but it seems very good and I really hope that a subtitled version isn't far away.

I only discovered this fine film a few months ago myself...a brilliant little tale with some fantastic characters.
