USA Playstation Network sign-up issue

So I am trying to sign my wife up for her own PSN account, and when I get to the point where I enter her email address, the system states it cannot be used. I sent an email to Sony and was told that her email address is currently being used by someone else. I will note that she does have an email address that would be coveted by some people. So it appears someone has signed up for an account with her email address. Sony tells me that there is nothing that they can do that she will have to create another email account/address if she wants to sign up for the playstation network. This seems a bit ridiculous to me, that it seems this would be a violation of the terms of service and that the account would be at the very least suspended and the email address vacated in the system but Sony says they cannot do this. Has anyone else run into this and if so what was the outcome? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Haha, that's a strange story. However, if they're using your email account can't you just hit the "Forgot my password?" button and they'll send the password to the user account to YOUR email address? You could then delete it or do whatever.

Nifty! That's a great answer, and I wish I had thought of it.
