Question HD Camcorder Shopping - Canon/Panasonic?

I am not an idiot when it comes to HD stuff and I want the best picture I can get for my money. However, I am not going to be shooting the next Cloverfield either. This camera is going to be for memories and events. I want the best bang for the buck.

I have been lookign at the Canon Vixia HV40/30. Som say the 30 is better. Some say tape is dead.

The next one is the Panasonic HDC-HS250K.

Both seems to get great reviews. Question is, tape or digital? I hear tape will give me the best picture. Then I hear the motor whine from tape is picked up by the audio. Not good. I am really confused.

I prefer to stick with Canon (because they have the best digi cams) and/or Panasonic. I have never been displeased by either company. Sony on the other hand, not my preferred choice.

Please help!
