USA Best rhythm guitarists thread?

Here is a thread dedicated to the rhythm guitar, a very important part of many bands/groups. I heard the classic track "Pick Up The Pieces" by The Average White Band, and thought Onnie McIntire's percussive rhythm guitar was major part of that song. Another great one was was John Lennon (RIP). What are are some your faves?

John Schaffer of Iced Earth! He's amazing! I swear his right arm must be bionic!

Beyond him I would actually say Eddie Van Halen. His rhythm playing is grossly overshadowed by his lead play. He is a terrific rhythm player.

Yep, some players are BOTH great at rhythm and lead, Jeff Lynne of ELO and The Move fame is great example. Just listen to such tracks like So Fine, Livin' Thing, Turn to Stone, etc.

Robb Flynn - Machine Head. Plays good leads but he is mostly a riff monster.

Mark Morton - Lamb of god.

Joe Duplantier - Gojira.

I was going to say Jon Schaffer as well. To me he epitomizes what a rhythm guitarist should be.

My favorite is Izzy Stradlin from Guns N' Roses.

Funny! Yeah, but you have to remember we all have different tastes. You made a good call (in my opinion) with the EVH mention. His rhythm is fantastic, but of course his lead is legendary.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Keith Richards as of yet!

No disrespect to Keith Richards, but this is a BEST rhythm guitarist thread. I have all the respect in the world for Keith Richards but no way in hell do I put him in the "best of" class when it comes rhythm players.

I tell you another guitarist I like for his rhythm play is Tom Scholz of Boston. I have always thought Boston had such a killer guitar sound. He may take an additional guitarist out on the road but in the studio it's all Tom Scholz!

I suppose we have a difference of opinion then!

Bruce Springsteen started out as lead on the early stuff but now has switched mostly to rhythm playing.

The late Tom Fogerty was perfect rhythm to brother John's lead. Listening to CCR's "Cosmo's Factory" as I write this, a perfect album IMO!
