Default Speaker advice - Definitive 600, Mirage Nanosat?

I would appreciate some advice for upgrading my speakers. Going to buy a new 5.1 set. I'd like to set a limit around $800 for the set. I want to stick with small satellite speakers. These are for a medium to large living room.

Two sets that interest me (so far) are the Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 ($800) and Mirage Nanosat ($600). Preference, other recommendations?

Edit: I would love to splurge for the Definitive 800, but that may be out of my price range. Hypothetically speaking, would this be worth it? If so, what would be the next best option?

Thanks!

I used to have a Def Tech ProCinema 600 system in my bedroom, great satellite speaker system. It is perfect for small rooms. I was using it in a 11.5' x 11.5' bedroom with a 7.5' ceiling. If you must have a small excellent performing satellite speaker system, the Def Tech ProCinema 600 system is the way to go. How large( W x D x H ) is your room?

I think definitive isn't the clearest bass at higher volumes, but their speakers are made well and I was impressed on the whole with the ones I had. I can't say the same about mirage. Their speakers sounded muffled, and unclear. I wouldn't go that path personally.

Both DefTech and Mirage are wonderful speaker manufacturers, but I'm not sure if I would pick their satellite speakers for a medium to large room. Sure they are great space savers, unobtrusive and maybe some WAF for you, but I don't beleive they will give you adequate punch.

Have you considered starting with a 2.0 (fronts), 2.1 (fronts/sub) or 3.0 (fronts/centre) system? You can always build on at a later date.

Ok so I take it you need to have smaller speakers for whatever reason. Let me suggest that you look into these bookshelf speakers because they will have better mid-range/bass and very good detail.

http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PBIMB15 2 pairs for $250/pr = $500
Get this center channel to match
http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PBIMC40 $250

$750 and you have a great bookshelf system that will sound a lot better then the small satelites you are looking at.

I have the Mirage Nanosats (5.1), Center Channel and 10" Omni-Sub and I'm very pleased with the reproduction. My den is about 20x20 and I have 13 foot ceilings. For a mid-level SAT speaker set-up with my Onkyo 705, I am extremely pleased with the sound. I have yet to get the speakers to distort, and I crank it up when the wife and I watching movies on the Bluray.

Satellites in a medium to large room was my concern too. Was the reason I asked for room dimensions. I would've suggested he bumped up to the ProCinema 800 or 1000 system, but he seemed set on "small speakers".

Thanks for all the advice guys!

With all of the gift certificates and cash I netted for Christmas, I think I am going to splurge with the Definitive 800's. I've got a free (Best Buy Premier Silver) home theater consultation set up in two weeks to get my $100 coupon towards a home theater purchase.

You should try a side by side with surround sound speakers. I've been auditioning surrounds recently, and those specifically were just terrible. I figured being omni's they'd be more encompassing, but the bipole did a much better job on top of sounding a hell of a lot better. I know everyone has their own tastes, but this was more then a warm distortion. It was like the midrange was muffled. Like there was a pillow between the speaker and you. Just my 2 cents.

Well, probably won't be doing side-by-side demos considering this is what I bought within the last couple of years and I'm not even close to looking for a new set-up, and have no reason to look. Yes, sound is very subjective and I can't say that my set-up sounds anything like you're describing. One person's bad experience is not always applicable to another. I'm sure there are many "better" sounding surrounds out there, but I'm very satisfied with what I have. But thanks for your opinion.

Def tech 800 or 1000 the 600 isnt all that bad but requires a specific hook up to the sub then to the speakers to obtain the best/optimal sound df tech intends for you to get.
someone here posted the def techs sounded muffled in lows and to that i say i highly doub they spent the time to set up the system the way it was intended
