Default Urban Meyer Resigns

Florida football coach Urban Meyer resigned today due to health problems. Meyer's final game will be the Sugar Bowl early next month. This is a huge shock because Meyer seems healthy but in a statement he said he's been ignoring his health for years but recent developments have forced him to reevaluate his priorities of faith and family. No word on what the health problem is but it must be major for Meyer to resign. No discussion yet on who will replace Meyer. His defensive coordinator Charlie Strong recently became head coach at Louisville.

The stress was probably too much to deal with. He'll probably take a few years off before returning to coaching. Maybe a smaller, less stressful program.

This is a huge shock! Like you said Fate, he seemed like he was in great condition and as far as the stress, I wouldn't put too much stock into that theory. But he did mention family and that seems to make more sense.

I hate to see him leave the collegiate level, but I hope everything turns out well with whatever is ailing him.

This is a huge shock, but I wish him the best. I hope he gets to sort everything out and come back to what he does best, which is coach college football. You'd be hard pressed to find a better head coach in the sport.

Can't say I am sad to see him go, he whooped up on my Vols enough. But he is a great coach, and I wish him the best with his health.

His health is more important than coaching maybe he'll be back eventually

good for Urban for not pushing his body too hard... I think I heard he has been having frequent hospital visits for the last 3 years, I am guessing he wanted to stay until Tebow left.

That would be awesome.

Maybe the Redskins could make it back to .500!

In truth though, I see Florida free falling from the BCS rankings next season. They lose Tebow and their coach, among other players.

I agree Florida is going to fall next year, but not a free fall. They will get a quality coach and they have had top-tier recruiting classes every year so they should still be a quality team. It's going to be interesting to see what way they go for a coach. I've heard Bob Stoops' name a lot. He was the defensive coordinator there when Spurrier was coach and they tried to get him in 2001. Dan Mullins could be a possibility as well. He did well this season in his first year at Mississippi State and was Florida's offensive coordinator prior to that so there wouldn't be much change. Charlie Strong could be a possibility as well, as he hasn't signed a contract with Louisville yet, but I doubt they would go after him.

I think it will be either Mullen or Stoops with Shanahan being the darkhorse. Meyer is probably going to be lobbying hard for Mullen since they were together for so long and remain close friends. But I just don't know if Mullen wants to leave what he has started at Mississippi State.

Less than 24 hours after he resigned, Florida coach Urban Meyer is instead taking an indefinite leave of absence and opening the door for a return to the Gators.

As reported by Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com, a person familiar with decision said Sunday that Meyer had changed his mind. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made by the school.

Meyer is to speak at a news conference in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday night, Meyer said he was stepping down after five seasons as Gators coach because of health concerns.

If he decides to go this route, I wonder how long this leave of absence might be. A couple months? Until spring practice? A whole year?

Honestly, if it's that short a period of time, what a waste of a news day...I think it may be at least a year.

What is with Florida coaches leaving and then changing their mind? First Billy Donovan leaves the basketball team and changes his mind, now maybe Urban Meyer.

Who would take the job now. They would be nothing but a place holder till he decides to come back.

They've named offensive coordinator Steve Adazzio interim head coach for now.

When I heard about him taking an indefinite leave, I figured they would have to pick from within. Wonder how this will effect recruitment?

I'm sure they begged him and said look just take some time, but don't leave forever he did more in 5 years then the O'l ball coach ever did in 12.

I hope he gets his health straightened out and is back coaching next year or the year after.
