Is there an audio setting in the receiver?

Do you mean anything beyond turning on or off the Dolby Digital?

I guess. I had no idea that was even there. I'm assuming (and I know what that means), that unless I told the receiver to turn ON the Dolby Digital it will be off?

Don't forget if the source (channel) is not DD, you won't get DD. The difference is not strongly noticeable, but more subtle. However, you should hear some kind of difference....I know I do.

Thanks.....now here's my next silly question. I have my audio going from my DirectV receiver into my home theater receiver by way of optical cable. Is it possible I don't have my home theater receiver setup correctly?

Some receivers need to be set-up to receive optical in the menu. Does your receiver have this option where optical would need to be set for that input?

Yes. What does your receiver display say about the format of the incoming signal and what does it say it is feeding to your speakers?

Also, are you testing for differences with programs that have real DD 5.1 soundtracks? Many TV shows are done in stereo and then re-packaged in DD 5.1 by the TV station. That happens with newscasts and many sporting events. There really isn't a 5.1 mix and the surrounds are either silent or barely used. Most new primetime network shows have genuine DD 5.1 soundtracks and you should hear the difference with those.

So.......most of the things that i watch on TV even though they are HD, may not be in surround sound?

I don't think so simply because my receiver only inputs Audio through optical. It DOES NOT input audio through HDMI.

I would think that if it needed to be set up to receeive optical, it would not have worked to begin with!

Correct. Most are not. Even major sports events that are mixed in 5.1 often make very little use of the surrounds.

+1.....if you have HBO or another movie channel, try one of these HD channels...chances are you'll find a true DD 5.1 there to compare it to.
