It's looking to break my top 25. I can't give it a spot just yet as I'm only 6 hours in!

Disclaimer: I love stories in RPG beyond anything else, and I'm actually FOND of "cliche" RPG story lines.
Top:
10. Dragon Quest 5 (first of it's kind in epic, branching story-telling)
9. Disgaea (only the first has a truly humorous and re-playable story)
8. Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core
7. Valkyria Chronicles
6. Lufia 1+2
5. Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (1+2)
4. Final Fantasy Tactics
3. Chrono Cross
2. Final Fantasy X
1. Xenosaga Trilogy (Albedo is the best "bad guy" ever created)

Honorable mention: Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire games 1+2 (all I've played), Suikoden 4+5 (haven't played the others), Lunar Silver Star Story Complete, Dragon Warrior 7, Final Fantasy 8, Dark Cloud 1+2, Star Ocean 3, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Spectral Souls.

Influential:
Final Fantasy XIII needs to be on the list, though I like BlackMamba's. I mean, look at how many PS3's the game alone has managed to sell in Japan so far. It will be interesting to see what the numbers are here in the states between the 360 and PS3 are.

Sequel-worthy:
Kingdom Hearts already has a third title "in the works" but unannounced officially.
Dragon Quest
Lufia (if you could incorporate the puzzles into a 3d area, or even make a high-def 2d/overhead, it would be awesome)
Xenosaga Episodes 4-6 (it was a shame to tease us with the idea and leave the third game hanging the way it is)
Dark Cloud 3
Final Fantasy 7 (a remake would be fine.)
Elder Scrolls 5
Spectral Souls-type game (heard the 360 version was a total travesty.)

Most Anticipated:
White Knight Chronicles
Finaly Fantasy XIII
La Pucelle Tactics PSP
Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP)
And, since this is the first I've heard of it, Lunar PSP (providing it has the same stellar voice acting as the others.)

Only one person mentioned Ultima!?!? This game pretty much CREATED the western style RPG genre as far as I am concerned.

As far as modern games are concerned Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls/Oblivion are the only recent ones I really like. I strongly dislike JRPGs unfortunately.

Nice list. Totally forgot about Grandia. Never played 3, but the first was epic!

Totally forgot about Ultima too. Never got into it as much as others, but still solid.

Still, not a bad few games to have under your belt! WKC should be awesome because it's a Level 5 product, but the mixed reviews have me worried. Even Rogue Galaxy (which I thought was pretty awesome) didn't have quite this amount of variance in review scores.

Another goodie - wish I would have spent more time with the game. This was one of the ones I rented as opposed to bought (surprising considering how good it was and how I practically own every RPG for the SNES).

I'm actually somewhat fond of cliche storylines although these days its more for nostalgia than anything else. DQ8 for example brought me back to JRPGs after I had my fill.

Never played Suikoden 4 because I was sorta disappointed with 3, but 5 was a throwback to the Suikodens of old (1, 2). Good game - probably an 8/10 in my book.

I think FFX probably deserves more influential even more than FFXIII if only because it moved a lot more PS2s than FFXIII can hope to do (also, it doesn't help now that it's multi-console).

A Lufia sequel would be epic (I know there's a Lufia 1 remake for the DS, but I want to go forward, not backwards! At least make a high-res 2D remake for PSP or something)

check out the pics for the new Lunar (PSP) jeabombers - looks better than the original IMO! XSeed is the developer and I think they've done an excellent job (first of all sticking with 2D) upgrading the visual look of the game.

Yeah, it totally slipped my mind. Back then I wasn't huge into WRPGs but I did play a couple Ultimas and enjoyed them.

Zelda
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Zelda: A link to the Past
Secret of Mana
Baulders Gate (PS2, can't remember the exact name of it)
Phantasy Star II (odd since now I can't stand RPG's now that don't have actual gameplay but I played this one to the end)

----
The more videos I watch of Demon Soul's the more I want to pick it up.

I thought about mentioning Ultima, but the NES version that I played wasn't all that fun (or, rather, there was no actual "hey, go here" information.) The king at the beginning of the game tells you to a cave and retrieve something, but I'd go there and get slaughtered by "The King". Maybe I was just doing something wrong? It was fun to do everything else, granted, but no matter how high of a level I was at, I couldn't "find" any item in that cave and got slaughtered by the king....

Althought dated now, I liked the old Might & Magic series on the PC for it's turn-based combat. Also had the bank concept where you would actually earn interest on your gold.

lol, true. Such an iconic spell. FF3 (6)'s Meteo.

I vaguely remember an NES version, but from what I can recollect it was different from its PC counterparts (maybe I'm wrong)

Phantasy Star was a pretty good series. I admit I didn't play enough of the games to make an accurate judgment to its quality, but they seem to be appreciated by RPG enthusiasts.

Definitely pick up Demon's Souls - great game (so far)

Can't say I remember a thing from the old Might & Magic games, but I was probably too young at the time to comprehend such complex concepts (interest?!)

Favorite and most influential:
Ultima VII, Ultima Underworld, Eye of the Beholder, & Baldurs Gate 1/2

Those got me into RPG's, and for the most part ended my run with them. I really enjoyed KOTOR for the Xbox, and I believe it was called Shining in the Darkness for Sega Genesis, but beyond those, haven't found one that has sucked me on the consoles like the old PC games.

Oblivion/Fallout were fun, but never really sucked me in enough to complete them. I just picked up Dragon's Age and hoping that keeps me busy for the winter.

I do love Demon Soul's, but find it tough to consider them in the same category. More of an action game with RPG elements.

I probably will after it dies down in price or I can trade something older I haven't been playing. I rarely have time to game, that's another problem and Demon Souls sounds like it takes quite a bit of dedication.
