USA Questions on the Buffalo MediaStation writers

http://www.buffalotech.com/products/.../mediastation/

Are the Buffalo BD writers good? And would they work on a desktop iMac?

When the 8x MediaStation was first introduced, it was based on the Panasonic SW-5584. The SW-5584 was good at the time, but there are much better drives out there now. Anyone know if Buffalo is using a different drive design now?

It looks like the br-x816u2 is based on the Pioneer BDR-203.

I’d look at something that employs a current generation recorder like the 12x Pioneer BDR-205.
