Default Monsters vs Aliens 3-D announced

Though details are still sketchy Dreamworks announces 3D Version of Monsters vs Aliens

When Monsters vs Aliens was first announced many were dissipointed by the lack of a 3D version similar to the ones The Polar Express and Coraline got on Blu-Ray. When 3D was such an important part of the theatrical experiance why leave such a thing off Blu-Ray. Im of the mind that Dreamworks made exactly the right decision. The 3D versions on Coraline and The Polar Express based on anaglyph sucked and would have been awful for Monsters vs Aliens. Monsters vs Aliens was instead given a reference quality 2D transfer that trumped any possible anaglyph presentation. Though anaglyph 3D was still used on the disc for Bobs big Break short movie and a game. But the movie remained without

Dreamworks makes Monsters vs Aliens the first Blu-Ray annouced for the new Blu-ray 3D standard. One that allows full color polarization in 1080p high definition that can for the first time truely replicate the theatrical experiance. Exact details on extras or release date are unknown. I was one who held off the original release because I knew this release was coming. 3D is the best way to experance this movie and this release should look great

Yyyep--KNEW it would happen the minute I bought that used copy on Amazon.

Used to happen all the time in the old birth-of-DVD days:
Quickest way to make sure a new version comes out next week, just buy the old version after holding out.

You both understand that in order to take advantage of Blu-ray 3D, you will need a new 1080p HD display that is 3D certified and a Blu-ray Disc player that is 3D certified.

If you play these back on devices that are not 3D certified then you will get the flat 2D presentation in 1080p. The good news is that if you have a Playstation 3 then you can just download a firmware update to make it 3D certified.

I'll do the update for my PS3 since it ensures I have won't have any issues with future releases but I am not buying a new TV.

I'll stick with my 2d version...3d is great and all for theaters but I'll stick with 2d for the home theater.

Thats where the problem will be. At the moment LED has just begun and the plasmas and LCD have become really cheap. The consumers are not going to buy another T.V. People on the forums maybe but not your regular joe.

From my understanding of the article, this title won't even be for sale separately. So having SOME 3-D capable TV and BD player won't be enough. You need to buy a Samsung 3D HDTV AND a Samsung 3D Blu-ray player TOGETHER at the same time in this "package deal" - and only THEN can you get this title via Samsung. What a load of bull.

I mean, I'm sure eventually it'll be released separately for those with other 3-D purchase plans. But still, what a stupid goddamn thing.

I really hope that they make it clear that you need a new player/tv when these titles start coming in. Since a lot of these titles will be animated movies, I can already see confused parents purchasing something that they can't fully enjoy.

They talked about this on CES last night when Samsung had a press conf.
Sounded very intressting if you ask me, and the line up of 3D TV they did show made me breathless.

They also talked about ESPN3D a new channel that they will release together with Panasonic

Sounds cool, getting 3D like in theaters. However, I'm going to hold off, since we just got our HDTV about 2 years ago, and a Blu-Ray player just over a year ago (with Indy 4 and Iron Man ). I'll have to wait a bit. That's why me and my dad have got to see the 3D Avatar soon. Ten bucks says Avatar is one of the first 3D Blu-Rays to appear. I'd be surprised if they didn't, considering its popularity.

Exactly. Can't tell you how many DVDs I almost bought before going Blu and would've p***** if I did get. Maybe I'll hold of on potential 3D Blus. (I already got Coraline, so there's a double-dip there if I go for 3D...and I want Toy Story 1 & 2 so bad on Blu ).

This is certainly a temporary thing. I can't imagine Monsters vs Aliens 3D staying exclusive to this package for a lengthy period of time. Since 3D is such a small niche market stuff like this can be attempted to help move 3D hardware but eventually Im sure Monsters vs Aliens 3D will be avalible for everyone.

Is it really gunna be worth it...i mean as much as blu ray has finally caught on we all know it would be a risk to give people more of a massive expense that may deter them from the format completely. Also i have the samsung un47b7000...but i am thinking if the price is right how can i allow myself to be ok with simply keeping this tv and not have 3d.

I'd be more interested in having 2D BD discs converted to 3D. I certainly don't want to have to start replacing my "new" BD collection with 3D BD this soon.

Also, I don't watch many movies on TV anymore. I watch them on my projector and not much has been said on 3D projectors quite yet.

There actually are plans to allow 2D to 3D conversion. However I wouldn't get to excited about that. No player can create a quality 3D presenation from 2D. Its just not possible. Any 2D to 3D conversion will certainly look awful.

Yeah if you want quality 3D movies you will have to buy new discs. No way around it.

+1 on this. 3D was what gave me a reason to start going to theatres again, an experience I actually do enjoy. Having it at home would take that away again.

This is exactly why I want it at home so I dont have to go to the theater Avatar yesterday was my first theater experience in a while and it kind of sucks. You dont want to get up to go to the bathroom since you are going to be disrupting others from the experience, the old lady next to me I was convinced was going to die right there on the spot she was coughing so much/loud the guy behind me kept resting his legs on my reclining chair pushing me forward until I finally had enough and thrusted my chair back which he got the point and quit doing it. The old ladys on the right side of us were talking and laughing at the most inappropriate times, having to smell that ****ing buttery popcorn which I cant stand, hearing people eating, etc...........Long story short, I love my HT and if I can do 3d at home, there will be no reason to deal with all this BS.

I did not even get into the sound which is severely lacking on the low end compared to the home experience, and it is impossible to get correct discrete surround info in a theater that has surround speakers lining the entire side walls, some of which are in front of you..........how the hell are you supposed to get a proper surround experience in this case????

Bring on home 3d!

Just ordered my copy from eBay today for $34 bucks and some change. About the same price as Best Buys I guess, but a little cheaper. I hear it was great in 3D. I've only watched it in 2D. Looking forwards to this when it arrives. Should arrive in lest then a week. They are located in California... well, at least they charged me California state sales tax. That tells me they should be shipping from the state they charge sales tax... right?
