Default 3D HDTV qustion

Not sure if this is the right forum or not but I get headaches from watching 3D movies so I am not going to waste money on a 3D HDTV. But when I update my ps3 to 3D and if I got a 3D movie and the glasses I need would not having the TV kill it? I wouldn't watch the whole movie but I would like to see what 3D blu-ray looks like and maybe even see if I could finish a movie.

You won't be able to watch 3D without a 3D capable HDTV, 3D Blu-ray Disc, 3D Blu-ray player and the 3D glasses. If any part of this is missing the entire chain becomes 2D.

They'll probably be mighty expensive, but that's just be basing it off of the last 30 years of new technology. If you really want a 3D TV, I would wait till they figure out all the bugs, if the technology is actually something consumers WANT and when the price goes down and different companies bring out their offerings so the consumer gets the best options (affordable, different sizes, less bugs).

3D gives me big time headaches as well, I wonder if the 3D picture will still be 1080P? I know when I watched "My Bloody Valentine 3D" on BD the PQ wasn't that great. Isn't the whole reason we all spend are $ on 1080P sets for the the terrific PQ of 1080P? who would want to down grade PQ just for 3D, I'm not a big fan of this whole 3D gimmick. People are just starting to catch on to Blu-ray and HDTVs and now the big companies want to throw a curveball at us consumers with this 3D stuff. I bought 2 Kuros in 2009 and I don't plan on buying a new TV anytime soon. My in-laws just got their first HDTV for Xmas, some people are just catching up with the availability of HD and now we are supposed to get rid of our A/V equipment for 3D capable stuff. Personaly I'd rather introduce 2160P into the mainstream rather than 3D, I'm sure that will be next. I realize that the electronics companies have to compete with newer products but why not offer people a component that would let their existing TVs and BD players compatible with 3D instead of people having to go out and buy new things. Just my thought on this whole 3D thing

Yes - 2D Blu-ray is 1080p24.
3D is 1080p48, 24 for the left eye, 24 for the right eye.

The My Bloody Valentine 3D is completely different to what Blu-ray 3D will mean.

This is a brief explanation of what's upcoming - http://www.panasonic.com/3d/explore-...hnology.aspx#3

Everyone is talking about the emergence of 3D HDTVs, media and broadcasting. I haven't seen anything written about standardization of 3D technology yet. Has anything been standardized for the industry yet? I've read about the shuttered glasses approach, as well as the short-lived Phillips sets that required no glasses.

Also, when the dual image signals start, requiring the shuttered glasses and everything down the 3D food chain, will the traditional 3D with tinted glasses disappear?

I definitely can't imagine being an early adopter for 3D technology. It sounds like a recipe for getting burned.

Well the 3D technology for Blu-ray has been finalized - http://www.blu-raydisc.com/assets/Do...lean-16840.pdf

Whether the TV manufacturers choose different ways to display it remains to be seen, but it looks like the biggest players are using the same technology (Panasonic and Sony) and I'm sure that most will follow...that's the shutter glasses.

Watching the 3D portion of 3D Blu-ray Discs will only work on 3D TV's, but watching the 2D portion of 3D Blu-ray Discs and/or any regular 2D Blu-ray Discs or DVD's will work on all TV's.

Looks like this is where I should ask my 3d question. When I bought my Samsung hdtv 2 years ago it said it was 3d capable\ready. Does this mean it will work with my ps3 and play 3d movies like Avatar? My tv's model number is HL61A750A1FXZA

Thanks Doby, that makes sense. As long as the TV manufacturers are all working from the same source material, that makes sense.

Has anything been finalized for broadcast signals?

So how come 3D films like my bloody valentine 3D or journey to the center of the earth 3D are already out on bluray yet we dont need a 3D TV to watch them?
also channel 4 in the UK have already broadcast some movies in 3D.

Apart from needing a new display and BD player for 1080p content, we all better start saving for a new HDMI 1.4 capable AVR/Processor/Decoder and some tasty new HDMI 1.4 cables.

Or not.

I'll take Door #2. Unless I hit the lottery. Then I'll go have my own adventures, and to heck with movies, period.

Well, I was planning on purchasing a new Panasonic plasma this year, so I guess it will be the new 3D version. price permitting, of course. Sony just announced that they will have an update sent to the PS3s to make them 3D capable ( Hallelujah ! ). So all I will need is a new HDMI 1.4 receiver. Onkyo has announced that they will have those available this spring as well, so I guess I'll get one of those along with the new Panny plasma.

In all seriousness, regarding needing a new 1.4 AVR, I think the cheaper and more viable option for peeps will be to simply get an HMDI 1.4 Splitter and send the video to the display, and the audio to their current AVR.

I don't mind buying a new TV because I need a new TV anyways. I will buy a 3D TV for my family room and I will just use the older TV at my summer house by the beach. This way it is not going to waste. I do have a problem with having to buy a new reciever. I paid $1300 for my reciever and I don't want to waste more money. I know panasonic has made a Blu-ray player with 2 HDMI outputs one that is 1.4 which you can send the video to the 3D TV and one that is 1.3a that can go to my reciever for audio. This will eliminate me to have to spend another $1000 or so for a new reciever. I would still have to dish out $300+ for a new BD player though. At least its better than $1000.

I still do not know how Sony plans on making the PS3 3D capable with a 1.3a HDMI. I understand how they can do a firmware update to make it play the disc but to have them output to the TV without a 1.4 HDMI is beyond me.
