France What Are Your French Movie Blu-Ray Recommendations?

I already have the following French films on blu-ray.....

36 quai des orfèvres
Indigènes
La Haine
MR 73
Ne le dis à personne

.....with Les rivières pourpres on the way, but I want mooooore.

If you can recommend some native French films on blu-ray that are along the same lines as the ones I have and have English subs (region b locked coding is not a factor), I'd greatly appreciate it!

If you're into comedy, then try Les Visiteurs and Le Dîner de Cons, or the OSS 117 movies.

Le Pacte des Loups is a grandiose movie as well, but it's still not the same type as the ones you're looking for.

You seem to be keen on dark police-oriented thrillers, which France has a large array of. I could only cite a few movie names, but not many are out on Blu.

There was a similar thread a few weeks ago that I contributed to. One obvious recommendation would be Nikita. I would also suggest the two Mesrine films.

Le Pacte des Loups, mentioned above, is a great film and well worth a look.

Amelie and A Very Long Engagement are both out on bd and look great.
L'ennemi Intime, Chrysalis and La Mome are all very good.
some older classics are:
Le Mepris (contempt)
Belle de Jour

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I've never seen La Femme Nikita, so I'll pickup the U.S. version which is suppose to have a superior picture. As far as Brotherhood Of The Wolf goes, loved it but one I'll also hold-off for the eventual U.S. version.

Arkadin, quick question about the French blu-ray of L'ennemi Intime. This site lists the blu-ray's run time as 106 minutes, but imbd site lists the movie's run-time as 111 minutes. Is the blu-ray cut at all?

I just looked at my disc: The exact running time is 1:50:32. There are no cuts.

You are welcome.

I looked at your collection. So, here's what I would like to recommend:

1. Belle de jour - I mentioned in my top 10/20 list at the end of the year that this is one of the most important films to appear on Blu-ray in 2009. I suggest you grab a copy.

2. The Class - Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes. You could get our North American release by Sony Pictures Classics.

3. Deux jours à tuer - This is a strong drama with an excellent performance by Albert Dupontel (Irreversible). Directed by Jean Becker (L'été meurtrier).

4. Il Casanova di Federico Fellini - Fine, not a French film, but if you are going to place an order for French discs, you need this one. One of the best imports that you could get.

5. Johnny Mad Dog - Promoted by Mathieu Kassovitz (La Haine). Does this make it a French film, no, but it is well worth owning.

6. La piscine - Alain Delon and Romy Schneider in a deadly love triangle. Superb, though probably a very nostalgic film.

7. Subway - I absolutely love this film. (Together with Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva), I consider it one of the quintessential 80s French films. Arguably Luc Besson's best work.

8. Les tontons flingueurs - one probably has to be at least somewhat fluent in French to truly appreciate Georges Lautner's film, but I still believe that this one is well worth importing. I guarantee it won't come to the U.S.

9. Paris - Arguably Cedric Klapisch’s most mature film. This one is coming to the U.S. though, so perhaps opt for something else.

10. Secret Défense - this film is probably right up your alley. Fast, loud, and packed with action. And if you do not know who Vahina Giocante is, I suggest you do some research on Lila dit ça a.k.a Lila Says.

11. Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas - this isn't on Blu-ray yet, but you could take my words for granted -- it is well worth importing.

12. 13 Tzameti - a Georgian-French project, not on BD yet, but I strongly recommend that you get a copy for your library (SDVD R1). A knock-out of a film!

Anyhow...I think that you do not want me to start recommending French films that are not on BD yet. You would end up staring at a pretty long list

Pro-B

p.s.
All films mentioned above are reviewed here (sans the DVD titles).

Wow you didn't have to do all that, but thank you very much again! Sounds like a great list. I'll definitely check those out in time.

Amelie (of course). Also Hidden (Cache) starring the gorgeous Juliette Binoche (and it's a great transfer too).

Great is an understatement for the transfer of Caché, it is simply breathtaking the best Blu I own IMO.

That was a system error - it should have been French, not English. It has been corrected.

Hi

I've been reading this forum for a while now but this is my first post.

Sorry to get in on your thread, but since I'm new I can't create my own yet.

I'm off to Paris for Valentines day and while I'm there i'd like to pick up some movies, maybe 3 or 4.

I'm after things I can't get back home (UK) or movies that are just a bit different, I'm only fluent in English so this limits me slightly.

I was thinking about "Johnny Mad Dog" & :"Killing Zoe" so far, both of which would be blind buys for me.

I'm quite an avid collector (813 HD Movies and counting) so I'm open to pretty much any type of movie.

Sorry again for the hi-jacking, I hope you don't mind I just thought this query was along similar lines to mine.

Leon.
