Talking Mel Gibson's Viking Epic (DiCaprio Jumps Ship)

Now I first read about this a month ago, and was intrigued to say the least. Than I just found a little more news from a couple days ago in which Mel discussed the language. Yeah so um the words F***** and EPIC come to mind here folks.

Quote:
Mel Gibson will direct and Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a Viking culture-themed untitled period drama for GK Films and Icon Films reports Variety.

"Kingdom of Heaven" and "The Departed" scribe William Monahan pens the script though plot details are being kept under wraps. The project will mark Gibson's next directorial effort, but DiCaprio is expected to squeeze in a film before this one.

Gibson, Tim Headington and Graham King will produce. Filming kicks off next Fall.

Quote:
What are you doing next?

Gibson:
I’m working with Graham on the Viking movie. The very first idea I ever had about making a film…my first thought about ever being a filmmaker was when I was sixteen years old and I wanted to make a Viking movie. And I wanted to make it in old Norse, which I was studying at the time. It’s odd because at that age that’s a stupidly ridiculous idea cause how will I ever be a filmmaker. It’s just some kind of romantic pipe dream. But that was the first big, epic, wacky idea I ever had was to show Viking real.
Does that mean the Viking movie will be in English or in old Norse?

Gibson:
I think it’s going to be English - the English that would have been spoken back then - and Old Norse. Whatever the 9th century had to offer. I’m going to give you real.

Is that really important to you.

Gibson:
I want a Viking to scare you. I don’t want a Viking to say, “I’m going to die with a sword in my hand.” I don’t want to hear that. It pulls the rug out from under you. I want to see somebody who I have never seen before speaking low guttural German who scares the living shit out of me coming up to my house. What is that like? What would that have been like?

How hard is that going to be to cast apart from Leo?

Gibson:
He’ll be amazing. He’s a great actor.

This is an excerpt from an interview with Graham King who's produced films such as The Departed, The Aviator, Traffic, and Blood Diamond. Sounds like everything is coming together nicely on this picture.

There’s a lot. What else do you think, for you, is bubbling up that you think could be going later this year?

KING:
Well, the Viking movie I’d love to go. The one that Mel’s going to direct with Leo that Bill Monahan’s writing.

Is he? But is he writing it as we speak or has it been something he’s been working on?

Graham King:
Oh, no, no. We’ve been having meetings about this, about where to put the story. This isn’t based on one book. It’s based on a lot of research our guys have done to make a Viking movie. And then Bill, myself and Mel and Leo got in a room and kicked around ideas and 6-7 hours we sat around talking about it. And it was great. It’s one of the best meetings I’ve ever had-ever in this business.

Now when you do a meeting like that, do you record it to make sure you don’t forget about things?

KING:
No, no. We have people writing stuff down but we don’t record it. You know, when Mel was driving that train…as I say for me it’s just a terrific meeting because we’re all in it to make this movie. So Bill is writing. He’s going through his head. He’s coming up…it doesn’t take Bill long to put stuff on paper. I think he has the formula in his head. And he’s doing that now. While he’s in post on a movie and while he’s writing another script and, you know?

I was going to say.

KING:
He’s hot. When you’re hot you’re hot, right?

Mel Gibson has admitted that his new film might be the last he will helm.

The actor, who is directing a movie about Vikings, also revealed that the project was the first one he ever thought of as a teenager.

He said: "It was the first movie I ever thought about making. I saw it in my mind back when I was teenager. Seriously, it’s the first movie I wanted to make."

The 54-year-old continued: "And I think it will be the last film I direct. It’s the thing I have been going toward, in a way, since I was young, and I think when it’s done I may be finished.

"We're going hammer and tongs on the script right now."

It kind of doesn't and kind of does. Leo has branched out quite a bit over the years so it makes sense he owuld do something outside of what we have seen. I think he will be great.

Thanks for the updates Wyldeman! Really looking forward to this.

About time Mel is getting away from the silly religious BS like Passion of the christ and back to good action films. For a while there I was really worried about Mel's mental health.

Oh no problem, this is a film I have a lot of interest in, and see nobody else adding info to the thread here about it, so whatever I can find I share.
