Angry Where do they get this stuff???

I was discussing Blu-ray in another forum, and was taken aback by the following reply:

Quote:
The thing I don't necessarily like about BluRay is it seems like something one company (Sony) essentially owns the market on. I'm never thrilled about that. HD-DVD seems like something more hardware companies are working with which promotes competition and possibly more quality players, etc.

Although I absolutely love my Sony Walkman MiniDisc player, we all know what happened to that medium.

If BluRay wins, will Sony allow more manufacturers to make players?
Of course I proceeded to explain that he had it completely backwards, and it's HD-DVD that doesn't have any manufacturers besides Toshiba. He thanked me for educating him, and said his fear was misplaced.

But I gotta wonder where the hell people are getting these ideas. I asked him, and he said "I just walk around Ultimate Electronics once in a while and I thinks thats where I got the impression."

The Blu-ray disc association needs to start getting some commercials up on the air to start educating people. This level of confusion doesn't help in winning the format war.

I think Sony's tendency to be proprietary has people assuming their offerings will be restricted.

But, it is definitely odd that he got the idea there were only Sony players from going to stores. My local BB has Samsung, Pioneer and Sony. While the only HD DVD ever offered has been Toshiba models (no RCA, and no LG combo).

I agree, the BDA needs some "look who is supporting Blu-ray" advertising.

Very intelligent people I converse with on other forums refer to Blu-ray as Sony's format. Unfortunately, I think it's pretty much unavoidable.

Xbox fans are the worst...

A few months back, I went for a late night slurpee run to a nearby 7-11.
I picked up an issue of PSM and when I got to the counter...jesus, this clerk went off the deep-end on me.

When I finally left the store my slurpee was half gone and all I kept asking myself was "Where the #$%@ do they come up with this stuff?".

Unbelievable

Some standout quotes from that um..encounter:

"Universal only supports Blu-ray."

"Disney owns Sony and almost every other movie studio, Blu-ray has no chance."

"Blu-ray discs are so expensive, they can only make them in Japan. That's why the games are so expensive."

"Notice that you can stand the PS3 vertically, yah they copied Xbox360."

I think this misinformation comes from a fear of them being wrong about their beloved 360's. They know that Sony is kicking M$'s ass and they know it. On a side note I went to EB's site to check pre releases for games and they already have the new 80gig PS3 with Motorstorm for sale, also promoting the 5 free Blu Ray's.

Tretton was discussing the rumble feature and didn't entirely out. Would be nice to have while playing COD4, and Half Life Orange box.

From what I've read rumble won't be ready when the 80-Gigs hit in a month. It'll be ready either right before Christmas or in very early 2008. I think that's the main reason we won't see MGS4 in 2007.

Marketing is the weakness of the blu association. thats one thing thats been bothering me for a while. its great disney started its marketing campaign and the new hollywoodinhidef.com is there. what i would like to see before the next Fox release, is Fox starting their own marketing campaign. until that day, i will enjoy BD beating HDDVD anyways.

That's part of the cost they pay for associating it so much with the PS3.
Especially so soon after the failure of UMD.

Agreed, I'm wondering whether they're actually leaving it till towards the holiday season before really starting to try and market so as to get the best bang for they're bucks so to speak.

Hell they want to promote Blu-ray they should do it between them with a commercial that shows maybe 5 or 6 clips from this years biggest releases and then just stick up at the end "only viewable on Blu-Ray"*

and a little disclaimer at the bottom saying "*also available on DVD"...
