I would rent it first because you'll either love it or not be interested in it all. If you are interested in film as art every frame of it is absolutely gorgeous.

I am a fan of several films which use a style similar to that which this one ATTEMPTS to use, but I was very dissapointed with this film. I think the director had high artistic goals but fell short of them - giving us neither a great traditional epic nor a great artistic film.

Chalk me up as another person who loved this movie. Incredible photography and music. I'd have to agree that this one is polarizing from the differing opinions I've seen. A rental might be better first.

Well said. It's very hit or miss. I'm glad I own it, however I did rent it first which you should do as well.

The extended cut of The New World is a truly sensational film that I cannot recommend enough. No Blu-ray library is complete without having this film in it.

I'm a huge fan of The Thin Red Line, but I really didn't enjoy The New World very much. It is a visually gorgeous film, but by the end of the movie, I only had a vague notion of what the film was really about. I would also recommend renting first.

I studied the film for two years when writing my thesis on Malick's films and I can honestly say that in no way shape or form did Malick fall short of his perceived goals. He wasn't trying to make a traditional epic and he wasn't trying to make an artistic film.

I don't dismiss your distaste for the film because lets face it, how many ppl really have the time to study a film or director in depth? So, while I believe the film to be an utter masterpiece, I would highly recommend a rental first for a potential buyer. Malick's films are not for everyone.

That being said, the PQ is one of the top 5 on blu.

I love this movie but I can understand it not being for everyone. There is not a whole lot of action in it but the visuals are absolutely beautiful. It is a very elegant film.

Have you seen any of the other films by Terrence Malick? If not, it might be best to rent this as opposed to blind buying as his films (in particular this one it seems, IMHO), can be very polarizing and his work is certainly not for everyone (although extremely rewarding for those who have an interest).

I agree. Slow paced movie, interesting if you like history. Gorgeous scenery.

Breathtaking movie full of typical Malick trademarks...definitely not for everyone, especially those with little patience or short attention spans. This is a movie whose plot, just like its cinematography, must be soaked up. There isn't much to listen to because the story is mostly in the visuals. Disappointing how so many seem to have trouble with this type of movie, but different strokes for different folks.

well is it like australia? which again is a bit of a drag, but I enjoy it because the cinematography is superb and the blu ray is a great demo for video and audio. The australian outback never looked so good.
