2 channel w/sub

My father has decide to finally purchase a flat panel, new receiver and blu-ray. He wants to hold off buying new speakers right now so he will be using his Bose 10.2 floor standing speakers for the mean time. I will be hooking this all up for him and was thinking of letting him use my spare Energy sub (ESW-10) until he gets a decent setup. Do you think the sub will add anything since he only will have a two channel setup? If so, should I set his L/R speakers to small or should I just leave them set large?

Well you don't need to, but setting them to large can't hurt, since those speakers have an 8" midrange driver and an 8" woofer. If they blend with the Energy sub, you should have some nice bass extension

in my opinion, a sub makes or breaks an ht system. i don't want to think about not having my subs on when even watching regular tv. the sound is just so much fuller. also music takes on a whole new dimension w/ subs.

even if he's going to be building a system slowly, i'd definitely recommed letting him borrowing the sub to get him geared up for his bigger and better system to come...

I'm not sure I agree with you here. If you have a set of speakers that are of quality and can dig deep, you don't need a sub. Perhaps if you had a set of speakers with weak bass characteristics the addition of a sub would help, but I'm personally still not a fan of introducing subs for 2.0 music.

Erict, why not sell your sub, either of them to your dad? Depending on what your dad is looking for, the Energy ESW-10 could be a very good entry level sub. Maybe give him a deal like $150. Or the A2-300?

well john I have to use a sub with my speakers, they don't go as deep as say a pair of Monitor Audio RS6 or Dali's. I get very good upper mid-bass bet lower mid-bass is lacking and I like that fuller bass sound when my sub is on. However at my dad's house when I listen to this B&W 603 S2's I always have it on just 2.0

my c-500s aren't the most high end in the world but they can hold their own in 2.0, but as a former bass player, a sub has always been a must for me in music listening...

At the same time, you can get very musical subwoofers that do not show their presence such as a servo subwoofer, a sealed subwoofer, or an A7-900. In all honesty, my front speakers have good extension to the mid 20's with claimed output down to 16hz. With a proper amp, there is no doubt that they can get that low. There are also much larger speakers than mine that can go even lower. I absolutely love my SDA's without subs playing but with my subs playing, I feel the overall lower sound spectrum is better.

adding a sub will help his bose speakers sound better, the receiver won't have to use it's power to reproduce the watt hungry lower sound register only the frequencies above the crossover. adding the sub should be a win win situation for your dad..

I think it will just set it up for a 2.0 and then yes, if there is sound that is supposed to go somewhere else it should send it to the L/R speakers.

unless he still sets speakers assigned to certain areas... (surround:yes, center:yes), even when he has only two connected.

Well I just set it up today and it doesn't sound to bad. I ended up setting the LFE to "BOTH" as it sounded a little better with the 8" drivers in his speakers. I left the crossover set at 80hz which is a HPF on the Yamaha. I tried it both with and without the sub and the sub really makes a difference in the setup even though it's only a two speaker setup.
