Default I'm a Blu-ray supporter, but I don't see HD DVD completely dying soon

I own a few blu-ray movies, and a PS3 as my player. I wouldn't call myself a huge sony fan, but a general supporter of blu-ray's technology. What limits me from starting a bigger collection of movies is the lack of the dying breed called "HD-DVD". Although Blu-ray is winning the numbers game, HD-DVD is ressurrecting itself from it's coma-state.

Other than the 1.1 November Mandate, what are the other tactics Sony and other follower's to blu-ray? A good mid-grade 1080p player appears to be around the $299 (and soon falling) by toshiba?

Then, there are titles like Batman Begins, where it's been out almost a year on hd-dvd. Yet, it does not exist on the BD radar (is this due to the lack of 1.1 mandate present?).

If Blu-ray lowered their priced, and after the november mandate, I don't see how HD-DVD can survive

I don't see it.

What facts do you possibly see that suggest any kind of upswing for HD-DVD whatsoever?

And wait for Paramount's 'tidal wave' of releases and huge blockbuster titles slamming ashore during the holidays from other studios! The holidays WILL be the deciding factor. I'm almost sure of it!

Take a look at the sales numbers, how could you not consider HD-DVD to be a dying breed?

And Disney/Buena Vista. And Fox (finally). And MGM. And Sony pictures. There's a lot of action under those large umbrellas.

^^ None to be seen on HD-DVD ever.

*sigh* how many of these posts do we see a day?

as jtk said, what good news or major moving events have we seen for hd-doa? i haven't heard any positive news. however, br added a new studio, two new exclusive retailers (three if you include woolworths), blockbuster, and the list goes on.

when I 1st skimmed your post..I was ready to call you a troll...

but I think you are just giving everything HD DVD has too much weight...

we are up and the lead is increasing...

if tomorrow's Neilsen numbers are even near 3:1 again, I refuse to be worried...

and the powers that be (studio's, stores, consumers) all want this to go away soon so nobody will have cold feet about this...

This is the reason why Blu-ray will win:

http://www.the-movie-times.com/thrsd...f2006+ByTGross
http://www.the-movie-times.com/thrsd...f2007+ByTGross

Nothing adding or subtracting from the movie players have any affect on the information above.

Microsoft is still trying to fight the Court of Public Opinion--
One of the few courts still allowed to hand down (commercial) death sentences, whose judgments are final, and whose jury looks to be ending deliberations shortly around the January '08 CES.

They can spin oxygen about "grabing that faithful market share and keeping the word of mouth going", but that's only if they're planning to make, sell and rent all the movies themselves.
No Format Is An Island, and the tidal wave of Blu-defecting licensees is coming.

I must say I agree with domerdal, I had said this before on another thread but nobondy resonded on it, now we might be wrong, but like I had said. For HD-DVD having only one exclusive studio and some other neutrals, they have stuck there ground very good compared to our like seven exclusive and some other neutrals, we should have had them already pinned to the ground since the months of BLU-RAY being released, we barely started to get the lead since the launch of the PS3. No one will say it but I will for one exclusive studio this HD-DUD is holding up a very good fight from our power punching exclusive studios. But all I know as much money that I have spent on blu-ray and not choosing to own the hd-crap I hope you guys are right about blu-ray winning by the end or beginning of next year, cause I would have hated to have spent that much on it and just being a small collection of what use to be. Stay blu homies

its probly because lots of people invested in hd-dvd then they log on msn or sometihng and see why blu-ray will win or some article and then go screw that I spent good money on my hardware and go out and show support buying movies exc. but if the current trend continues they would have to give up a 300 blu-ray as of now beating a 300 hd-dvd with far more extras and stuff... and once sony exc. are able to rival there extremely low prices it will be over

HD-DVD is still around because MS is subsidizing it with their endless supply of money in an attempt to kill the disc market. If it wasn't for them, the war would have ended long ago.

Seems price stagnation is currently the situation. But, that may be simply to insure they don't Osborne the current offerings, again.

Bottom line is and will remain: You save $100 - $200 and use it to buy what? 2.5 - 3.5 PQ ranked movies?

What exactly is the point to saving money if you can't use it to buy the highest quality, or the films you want?

thank you for those who actually read my blog, and apologies to those who this type of thread my seem redundant.

I've just been trying to understand those who support HD-DVD and figure out why they are still fighting that uphill battle along with the dying breed?

One thing that brings much disappointment is that I thought HD-DVD fanboys were the extremely paranoid/overly-defensive whenever a format article came out. Unfortunately, I'd almost say the same, because some of your posts felt a little too personal, as if I had stepped on your toes for bringing a concern in my perspective... I came here to get a little clarity on the outlook of blu-ray from my fellow peers, in which I did, but some of you... cool off, I'm not on both sides of the fence.

I'm typically getting my info day-today from the following sites:

https://www.blu-ray.com
http://www.engadgethd.com
http://www.formatwarcentral.com

If you ever hear a post about HD-DVD or Blu-ray, you'll notice who the HD-DVD fanboys are... they tend to croud editors with "oh.. sony is filling your pockets with money".

I bluntly asks, what makes a HD-DVD-lover?

1. They all hate sony... so regardless of tech specs. it's this personal battle
2. They love Microsoft VC-1.. (which to my knowledge is also on blu-ray, but i'll stick to mp4-avc)
3. Ask them "why should i buy hd dvd?" their response is "we hve the movie 300, and it has extra features".... so am i to believe people will actually convert their library purchases because of one movie?
4. They tend to think critics like the picture quality better on HD dvd, so they will follow.

I don't see it completely dying for another few years, but I definitely don't see it growing at all after this Christmas season.
Toshiba will make players probably for almost as long after it's clear Blu-ray has won as Sony did with Betamax players 30 years ago.

(I say almost as long, because I believe Paramount will forego HD DVD releases next year and Warner and Universal won't be too far behind after that happens and the gap continues to grow)
