Default Krell introduces their $15,000 Blu-ray player

This player costs more than a pair of the current B&W 802Ds at full msrp.

Hopefully, there won't be any "surprises" under the hood!

Finally Krell has the obligatory blu-ray player for people who want to waste their money.

Actually, a pair of 802Ds also lists for $15,000 as of the new year.

One mans celing is another mans floor....But who can justify a 6000 Dollar Pioneer Plasma ???... Or why do all the Oppo people get so definsive over the BDP-83 being the best Blu player out there (I own one)... But it took what 5 years for someone to come out with all the features in a Blu player for 500 dollars as the First gen PS3 ...(Analog outs on the Oppo are no big deal for me wheres the WI-FI in the Oppo)... Carry on

I agree with your first statement. The question on the Pioneer plasma however, I will try to answer you. I have not seen this year's new HDTVs in person but for the previous generations there was nothing that came close to the Pioneer Elites. For the sale of discussion let's assume the Elites are $6k and the closest competition is $3k. So for 2x the price, one can get a product that is much better than the competition.

With regards to the members of this forum, the consensus would probably be that the best bd player is either the Oppo or the PS3 based on price and performance. Let's say $500 is the price. The Krell is 30x that price! At 30x the price, is that Krell much much better than the Oppo? I seriously doubt it.

I dunno about you but I think that many people here would buy a $1000 bd player (2x the Oppo) if it had the same difference between the Pio Elites and other brands. That's how I would justify the Pio Elite or any gear I would buy.

That said, I doubt if there is any member here that will be buy the Krell. Clearly that is for a different demographic and for most if not all members here it will be a waste of money. Just my opinion of course.

I have done it many times

bought McIntosh MLD-7020 laserdisc player($3200msrp) a clone of Pioneer CLD-97($2400) with a few minor mods.
bought Denon DVD-3000($1250) a direct clone of Panasonic-A350(I think it was like $600)
Bought 2 Integra DHS-8.8($1200) a direct clone of Toshiba XA2 ($700)

Ok I didnt buy the Mcintosh brandnew and got the integra after the format war so i didnt pay retail but still they were much more than their originals.

What justifies that price? Are the innards solid gold? Is there nano-technological pieces in there? WOW.

I agree. And just as a side note, this years TVs will still not match the legendary Kuro. Usually when a company stops making TVs, prices plummet and demand follows in suit. Kuros have been flying out the doors of every retailer; it's like a collector's item to own a piece of perfection. You can't even find one of those things anymore.
As far as Blu-ray players go, the only thing Oppo has on the PS3 is conversion and upscaling to 24fps 1080p with DVD's without a hitch. What the PS3 has on the Oppo is wi-fi. Trade-offs! I also hear that Oppo's video processor slightly exceeds the PS3's.
As far as Krell goes, jesus christ; 15K? I get the whole 4K TV compatibility feature but those TVs are at least a decade away from reaching the mainstream market. A bit early for those bragging rights perhaps? Buy an Oppo and save $14,500. Hell, buy a PS3 and save $14,800. That's absurd.
