Default Blu-ray.com Film Tournament Idea Thread!! Suggestions Are Needed??

Hey fella's and females I am thinkin about starting an official blu-ray.com movie tournament in the realm of a march madness type tourney. For those who dont follow college basketball, its basically they pick the top 64 teams and put them in a bracket and they play by seeding and the loser goes home and the winner moves on to the next round. I want to do sumthin like that with films. However Im not sure of how I should do it. Do we just vote and create the top films in general or do we do it by genre etc...I am opened to ideas and how u want the voting and specifics to go. Any suggestions are welcomed! Got Em!!

I actually think it's a great idea, not sure why someone automatically gave your thread 1 star.

What's gonna be difficult is getting the 64 movies that will compete. I would say pick only best picture winners, but not everyone has seen all those films (not even myself!). So maybe the top eight films in each of the following eight categories. Then you seed them all like for a normal tourney. To get the top eight, look back at some of the old threads. You def can find the top eight for sci-fi, romance/romantic comedy, and horror because we've had threads about them.

War
Sci-Fi
Comedy
Romance/romantic comedy
Action/adventure
Animated (even though it's not a genre, but a medium)
Drama
Horror

I'll second that, and it is going to be a time consuming process. However, I'd still like to see it happen.

This is the best way to do it for sure and yes it's going to be time consuming. But please do this it would be very interesting.

Yea that kinda what I was thinkin. I didnt want to do it by genre as that would mean several sub tournaments and that would take way more time to do. Also since we are lookin for best film overall and winner then we should include them all as 1 and let the genre's clash! Good idea and more suggestions are appreciated.

About the 1 star thing, I notice that everytime I make a thread that some idiot does that right off the bat. I have a pretty good idea of who but I dont stoop to that kinda immaturity! Anyway back on topic. I would love to hear more ideas. Got Em!!

I'd have to disagree, because there are certain genres that people regard more highly than others, for example, if you compare a really good drama to a really good horror, 9 out of 10 people would probably pick the drama to win.

Are they going to be seeded or random?

Is there going to be a play-in game(64 vs. 65)?

Should be fun.

My only suggestion would be that if we do genre's, we should limit it to four to mimic the four regions of March Madness. Perhaps...

Action/Adventure
Comedy
Drama
Horror/Sci-fi/Fantasy

Obviously animation would have to be categorized by the stories genre.

Use the top 64 highest grossing movies, adjusted-domestic only.

Seed it like the NCAA tourney. Top 4 grossers are 1-seeds, 5-8 are 2-seeds, etc.

I like this as well. I think the generes should definately mix, and see which one comes out on top. The only thing left is to figure out how to seed them.

Could also use the AFI top 100 lists...or possibly the lists Romulus derrived from user votes.

I agree with separating via genres too; it's too hard to compare films of different genres sometimes.

If it were to be done by Genre... why exclude one of them?

The only thing with that (which is what I'd use, fyi), is that a lot of ppl on this site don't watch the classics and there are many classics in the top 64, despite the presence of many modern films as well.

U may have a point but when and if we go that route I would make sure to explain goin in, to not be biased and judge the movie for what the movie is not because of the genre. But obviously not all people can judge fairly as we all have our favorites but I would hope we could try. Got Em!!

That would be a good idea but I think 4 genre's chosen is to little and well leave out to many films. With 8 we could still mock march madness but instead of 4 16 seed brackets we could combine the 4 brackets with two 8 overall seeds in 1 bracket to create 16 seeds per bracket if that makes since. Got Em!!

What genre would you prefer.

I'll admit that having comedy and romance/romantic comedy genres could lead to some debates, like is The Apartment a comedy or a romantic comedy, what about Some Like it Hot or There's Something About Mary, or even When Harry Met Sally?

But a movie's gross has nothing to do with the quality of the film, so there'd be a lot of action/fantasy films in and not great films like 12 Angry Men, Schindler's List, etc.

As someone said, we could just take whatever 64 and randomly assign them to regions.

I like the region idea, simply to immitate the tournament more closely. We could just name them after Actors or Directors instead. #1 seed in the James Cameron region is Avatar!!!

Umm Im not sure if thats a good idea because a lot of great films would be left off, and not to mention a lot of sequels would make that type of list. I just dont think we would get the best films that way but I hear what u are sayin though. Got Em!!
