USA OFFICIAL KINO International/KINO Video Thread

The following is the official KINO International and KINO Video thread, for those who are interested in KINO titles.

What is KINO?

Kino International was founded in 1977 as a theatrical distribution company specializing in classics and foreign language art films. The company began operation with a license to handle theatrical distribution of the Janus Collection, a library containing over 100 important European and Asian art films of the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Kino now boasts a catalog of over five hundred films -- one of the most important libraries of classic and contemporary world cinema titles available to the home video collector -- and has been honored by numerous critical accolades, including the prestigious Heritage Award from the National Society of Film Critics for its work in film preservation in 2002 and 2003.

Finally watched "The General" on Blu-ray. Wow! KINO did a fantastic job on remastering this film in HD. I was floored by the detail and clarity, especially if your previous viewing of the film had been VHS or bad public domain video files.

If "The General" looks this good...I can't wait for "Metropolis". Will be curious to see if they bring out D.W. Griffith films to Blu.

Aren't they officially known as Kino Lorber Inc now after the merger?

Great Thread kndy!

I have Battleship Potemkin, Fallen Angels, & Happy Together pre-ordered

I really want General, but have not yet convinced myself $25 is worth it.

I would like to buy all KINO blu-ray titles, but Ballast & Harvard Beats do not seem very interesting, what do you think?

Fritz Lang's Metropolis should be coming out this year as well.

I was very happy to see the release of Battleship Potemkin in April. I have a very bad DVD release for some years ago. After seeing what was done with The General, I am hoping that they can do the same for this one

Kudos to KINO for releasing some great silents, but what I really want from them is the rumoured blu ray release of Offret (The Sacrifice). Also a blu ray upgrade of Mirror would be fantastic as the their DVD is bad.

I read an interview in the thread for The General where Kino confirmed that they were working on Offret with the SFI, but I think it will require serious overhaul (the Kino DVD is pretty awful, and even the SFI R2 DVD could be vastly improved upon) and I think that in this case, they'll, have to go back to the negative, so while it is planned, I wouldn't hold my breath.

you should add Palisades Tartan to your list for distribution companies. If there is no thread we should create one. So far only Oldboy but soon vengence trilogy and 36.

i have seen the trailer for Ballast it looks interesting. I will buy it later sometime. I am not interested in Yale Beats Harvard.

good job Kndy. this thread must be a sticky

Hey Substance,

If you create a thread, please let me know and I can add Palisades to the list. I know you're a big fan of the company and it would give people a chance to know of other companies out there.

I'm the same. I plan on getting the 3 titles yet to be released but I'm not sure about the above mentioned. I don't need the full kino collection but if they're really worth watching...

I got The General for Christmas and I loved it. First time seeing the movie and the picture quality really is amazing. I'm hoping the Wong Kar Wai releases are as good of quality as the criterion Chungking Express.

Exactly, I just do not see Ballast & Harvard Beats as must owns, maybe someone can change our minds

I keep hearing the same thing about The General, I need to just go ahead & pick that one up.

I can not wait for the Wong Kar Wai releases & I do not think we have anything to worry about with Kino.

maybe ruscico will release it before kino. i know its a russion region c company but they did not region code their dvds and had multiple subtitle options including english for almost all titles. Ruscico has a great library of Russian titles such as Stalker, War and Peace, Anna Karanina etc.. but they have not gone into Bluray business yet.

I am a big Tarkovski and sci fi fan . I would like to see Stalker on blu-ray very much. Hope criterion will release Tarkovski titles(Andrei Rublev,Solaris) sooner than later(especially Solaris).

Just added your thread Substance!

I'm not familiar with "Ballast" but I remember before it came out, people on the threads were raving about it. As for the Harvard vs. Yale... Hehe...I'm curious about it...I know it's a big seller for them. But I don't follow the Ivy League Schools and I've seen some of it on YouTube.

What I want to see from KINO on Blu-ray...aside from the titles released.

- The Blue Angel (Marlene Dietrich)
- The Little Fugitive or The Films of Morris Engel with Ruth Orkin
- Birth of A Nation or D.W. Griffith set
- Diary of a Lost Girl
- Battleship Potemkin
- Days of Being Wild
- Nosferatu: Ultimate Edition
- The Fanny Trilogy
- Wonderful Town

Days of Being Wild was released in Hong Kong. I've got it and I'm happy with it. I kinda doubt Kino could really improve on it (besides tweaking the subtitle translation) but who knows?
