Red face Home theater audio help!

Okay, here's the sitch:
I have a PS3 hooked into an Onkyo HT-S3200 HTiB. The reciever from this perticular HTiB is pass-thru only. I had to use optical cables in conjunction with HDMI, which seemed odd to me as it defeats the purpose of the "all in one" HDMI cable. When I hit the select button while watching a blu, it says "multi-channel" on the top. I was looking at some screen shots of movies in other people's galleries and noticed that it says 5.1 surround on the top. Am I doing something wrong? It sounds like I'm getting surround sound.

I would appreciate any advice or info you guys could give me.

well the all in one for hdmi is basically for hdmi repeaters not pass through. passthrough only acts like an hdmi switch for your video sources.

i would check the manual ( http://filedepot.onkyousa.com/Files/...4141d4b6675563 ) but i think there should be a direct mode for your onk. and if your ps3 is set up correctly, (bitstream no lpcm) then it should display 5.1 dd or dts

Yup. I agree.
Nope.
"Multi-channel" aka "5.1 surround"
The "fat" PS3 can't bitstream( only the slim PS3 ), so it decodes & sends to your receiver as multi-channel PCM. If you want to see the new audio codecs displayed on your receiver you must have a player that bitstreams, letting the receiver do the decoding.

that wont make a difference since audio from hdmi cannot be utilized by his receiver. this is why he must use optical. if his ps3 is set to lpcm, he will get 2ch pcm which is probably why his receiver is displaying mutich.
