Canada Visiting Toronto - Canadian BD recommendations?

Hi all,

In a week or so I'll be visiting Toronto from Europe - I've been there a couple of times before, so I know the city pretty well and have bought many a DVD there (but any suggestions for good places to shop for BDs would still be very welcome.)

More importantly, I'd like a few suggestions for titles to look out for - ideally, some Canadian exclusives would be nice, but anything that's unavailable in Region B land is fine too. The other thing (which narrows it down yet further) is that I only have a Region B player, so discs will have to be either region free or at least have B playability included.

I know it's possible to look at lists of exclusives, region-free titles etc., but I'd like to have some 1:1 recommendations from Canucks (or those who've bought BDs there.)

Thanks!

Dazza.

Unfortunately, most of the discs available in Canada are identical (or nigh-identical) to their US counterparts, except that they're more expensive. This may mean that a lot of the discs are identical to their European releases, depending on the studio. Be sure to check out your local sources before dropping $35 on a disc! :P

That said, I'd definitely grab the Star Trek Blu Ray from Best Buy (Target in the US) that comes in a buildable USS Enterprise model. Still about $35, but so dang cool. I don't think it's available in Europe.

Also worth looking at, depending on your country's availability: Serenity, Firefly, Dollhouse, and the Pixar films.

Watch out for Alliance/Atlantis releases here, although a few are exclusives (Nightmare on Elm St, early Sin City release, etc), they tend to be 1080i, and the wrong aspect ratio.

On the good side, they tend to be cheap, around $10. buyer beware.

EDIT: to be fair, I think their recent releases have gone up in quality, and most have DTS-HD.

From Dusk Till Dawn is region free and a decent release.

most are 1080p (NOT 1080i - only a few are), however, most 2:35:1 are croppped to 1.78:1 and there are usually no extras. The transfers will more than likely not be of the same quality as a future USA release.
They usually all have DTS-HD audio

I was just in HMV downtown Toronto on Yonge Street and picked up Menace 2 Society which I've never seen on blu before. I think it's a Canadian release.

Thanks a lot for the replies, guys. Does anyone know if C.R.A.Z.Y is locked? Or the Cruising Bar 1&2 set? (I'm pretty sure it is?)
