Default Either a Yamaha V663 or V665..

I'm in the market for either one. Is Best Buy still selling the V663? Or am I better off getting the V665? I think I'm financially ready to update my audio part of my "theater." I have a list of speakers to buy already.

This is what I want from a receiver:

1. GREAT sound quality. Being a old musician, my ears love hearing clean, crisp sound. Plus, will it be powerful enough so I don't have to crank the volume 3/4 of the way up? The viewing room is less than 300 square feet.

2. Will my Blu Rays look as good going through this receiver just like going straight from my Ps3 to LCD?

3. Will it last me at least 5-7 years?

Thanks...

Lucky Luc

I believe that I have read that the RX-V765 is the successor to the RX-V663. I have the RX-V765 and it's pretty good. You can snag one from Newegg.com for about 400-450 during weekends. It's usually $599 but they often drop the price on weekends.

I'm still figuring out all the bells and whistles on mine but so far the sound is excellent as well as the picture. It's got more inputs than I can shake a stick at and it runs very cool. Check it out if you have a chance. Not too shabby!

Beefy,

How do you think it compares to the V665? Is that online store reliable?

Thanks

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of owning one or the other?

Does anyone have experience with the RX-V765??

The 765 is rated at 95 watts x 7 (20-20k hz) and weighs in at 24.3 lbs

The 665 is rated at 90 watts x 7 (1 khz) ans weighs in at 18.7 lbs

We know from bench testing that neither receiver will be playing at the stated watts per channel when 5 or 7 channels are active, however the 765 has the ability to get closer to those specs given it appears to have a larger Power Supply and Amp due to its heavier weight, and it is rated 20-20k, where we know that receivers rated 1 khz have false ratings.

If you plan to use the 665 or 765 with an external amp, then you are OK because you will by pass the internal amp for a more powerful one, however if you are not going to use the pre-outs for an amp, then the 765 would be a much better investment.

Thank you!!! I'll take a listen next time I'm in Best Buy. I just wanted reassurance that it's a good purchase.

well it is a good purchase, and the 765 would be the prefered purchase. I don't know if you will be able to sit in BB and listen to them and tell that oh, this one had more oomph to it while there for 30 minutes. I would expect that the 765 would be around 47-60 watts/ch x5 or 7 channels, and the 665 may be between 35-45 watts/ch(maybe more) with 5 or 7 channels driving.

The other suggestion that I would make is that if you want something that is really a nice receiver and your going to get accurate specs on would be this Marantz or this older version You will actually get 88.7 watts with all channels driven. The only things is they are Factory Refurbs that come with a 1 yr factory warranty, however some people cant wrap their minds around a refurb. But up to you.

What speakers do you have?

Question

Well, to start off, my viewing room isn't bigger than 200 square feet.

As far as speakers, I was gonna check on Polk Audio speakers and JBL speakers. Are the Polk R150's ok?

I wasn't going to worry about the speakers too much until I knew my price range. Money is tight right now in Obama's land of "hope and change." My ol' lady and I just started talking about building a decent-to-nice HT set up. A receiver is first.

I appreciate your help!

Budget might be $800-1200. Gotta find out first. Is there a good speaker and subwoofer combination good for a budget?

well the reason I bring up the Marantz and it power is because at lower volumes you may get better sound throughout.

I will leave Obama alone....

for $800-1200 there is a lot you could do and better then the polks. I would look at the Premier Acoustic PA-120 for about $230, that would leave about $570-970 Many would say get the eD A2-300 sub, but for budget purposes, I say the PA-120. Which is still very nice.

For fronts based on the deals out there I would get PSB Image line, They are far better then Polks and JBL, IMO and they were recently discontinued so there is great pricing on them.

T45s fronts, C60 center and Alpha B1 surrounds $947 total @ dmc-electronics.com, You will find yourself in HT and Music heaven. You said you were a musician, so if you want clean, clear sound, with excellent highs and deep depth in the mid-range and good lows, but not extremely low, these would blow you away. It is the max side of your budget, but well worth it.

Otherwise the Energy C-300s $260/pr from vanns.com and the C-C50 center from ebay($94) would make for an excellent front sound stage too. And if you add the PSB Alpha B1s for $189, then total is $543. I have the Energys, they have been discontinued also, but there is still some floating around, and they make very good musical speakers that excel in HT application too. Again, better then Polk and JBL IMO.

I owned the 663 before buying the 3900 and it's a great AVR.

I also own the 663, and i'm very happy with it, i have large speakers as you can see in my pictures, and it power them well enogh, I never raise the valume to more than 18, normally around 24, you know wife factor, but when ever she is out I push it harder and it sound exelente.
So my vote goes to the 663 over the 665. But if I have to chose again, I'd look in the marratz, I read a lot good things about them.
But if you get the 663 for a good price, you can get a nice amp like the e
emotiva and would blow any other receiver in SQ, that's what I'm planing to do next year.

I have the Yamaha RX-V765 and have been very happy with it, I can't really tell you how it will push the bigger front tower/center channel tho, I don't have any speakers hooked up to it at all. You can take a look at my gallery and see how I have it set up. I am running two emo amps, so I really can't say what it will sound like just off the receiver.

What is your receiver budget? I have the Yamaha HTR-6080 (RX-V861), and the current replacement model is the RX-V1065. It's a very musical receiver and it offers a lot of detail.

Not too much. I'm kinda leaning towards a RX-V765, then adding an amp down the line.

HI,
Go to Yamaha's website. The 663 and 863,though discontinued, are still available. Do a bulletpoint comparison. Be sure to compare the 663 to the 765 and the 863 to the 1065. You will see that the 663 and 863 are better receivers. Yamaha added few features and left off several more features on the new '65 series to save money. If you search around the 863 and 663 can be found at a bargain.

I have only one doubt here. I use my system MOSTLY to watch TV, so I have to run the AV receiver at all times. The new '65's have the ability to pass the cable box signal through to the TV while the receiver is in the standby mode. The '63's do not have this feature. As much as I'd like to have it, I can't see replacing my 863 to gain this one feature.

I own a V663 and use it for drivng external power amplifiers for the front L and R, and center speakers. It does fine driving my four surround speakers. But it still wouldn't be an overkill adding more external power amps to drive the surrounds. I would recommend the V663 or V765 which ever costs less to use as a pre/pro.

Otherwise, if you plan on using the V663, V665, or V765 to drive 5 to 7 speakers, you'd do better to buy an AVR that can deliver an honest minimun of 100 watts RMS (125 W would be better) per channel with all 5 or all 7 channels driven.
