Default Onkyo 805 : Only FR & FL speakers on display?

The display on the 805 only shows the FR & FL symbol, the others are dark, even though I have 5.1 speakers connected to the machine and used the setup mic to set up all those 6 speakers (successfully). There's audio on all 6 speakers. So I wonder why only those 2 are displayed? According to the manual, not 2, but 6 symbols should show.

Thanks for any hints!

Default just a few thoughts. Hope it narrows down you troubles

Herm… there could be a few things going on. Not having the 805 onscreen displays in front of me it is hard to give a walkthrough. I know there is no button that says “sp sel” on the front of the unit, is there something similar to that in the on screen guide? Have you played a 5.1 or 6.1 DVD? The unit may need the 6.1 or 5.1 source for all the lights to turn on. Try the DTS Nero Movie setting. I really think that if you find the speaker select button you can select the number of speakers. Also is the digital source selected to the one you using such as, Digital input 1 or HDMI 1. You may have tried all these things already. Funny thing about receivers the problem is usually the smallest little setting. Good luck, the payoff will be worth the time.

Thanks for the reply, problem solved in the meantime ... both machines have hdmi 1.3, but apparently they don't communicate audio well enough ... the 805 only picked up a Dolby Pro Logic Surround signal, even though DD 5.1 was sent (I tried three different DVDs)

Problem solved by adding a digital optical cable and running audio over this cable and only video over the hdmi. Now I get DD 5.1 / DTS ...

wow, reducing it to an optical cable!!

what device are you playing your movies from?? a dvd player, ps3...?

what settings do you have the player set on? I know if its a dvd player, it may be set to PCM downsampling, which could give you the 2 channel audio...try turning off the downsampling, or better yet, switching to bitstream.

but again, you leave out important info...so no one can really help you at the moment.

well, the problem was incompatibility between the hdmi interfact of the DVD player and the amp. So I only got Dolby Pro Logic instead of 6 channels. (Though even that sounded good with the Onkyo 805).

As I only use a DVD player at the moment, I am not losing any audio quality. With TrueHD or similar stuff I'd need hdmi for audio, of course. But DD5.1 or DTS sound pretty much the same over optical cable as over hdmi.

For a Blu-Ray player I'll use hdmi again, of course! (Hopefully that one will be compatible).

the reason I ask, is because I have an upconverting dvd player (hdmi) and I noticed the same thing, that I was only getting 2 channel and then my reciever would use PRO LOGICII ...realizing that my dvd player was set on pcm output, then I changed it to bitstream, and walla...dd5.1

I suspected that too, but it was transmitting bitstream all the time ... I'm not 100% certain, but the guy at the store (some HiFi guru) said that the hdmi connection wasn't 100% compatible ...

... uh well, as I said, as long as it's nothing better than DD5.1 or DTS, the optical cable isn't worse than hdmi
